Safety First

Rollerblading and ice skating are a fun sports and great exercise not to mention it’s a terrific way to stay in shape.  All kinds of people from love to skate and rollerblading simply because they are so much fun.  It’s also a great way to enjoy the outdoors,  cruise around your neighborhood and spend time with friend.   However, its very important that you pay attention to safety measures that you need to follow to avoid accidents or injuries.

You can’t always contol what’s around the corner but that that does not mean you should throw all caution to the wind.  Taking safety precautions can make the difference between a nasty spill where you may suffer minor injuries such as scraped knees or bruised hands or a more serious injuries such as a collision, concussion or a broken wrist.   It’s absolutely critical that you take the proper precautions.

The most important important piece of  protective equipment for rollerblading is the helmet.  Never rollerblade without securing your helmet properly to avoid serious head injuries.  Make sure that the helmet is of good quality and that it fits your head. Oversized rollerblade helmets are no good because they provide no protection whatsoever. On the other hand small helmets are too tight and too uncomfortable. The interior lining of the helmet should be lined with cushioned padding for comfort and added protection.

Other rollerblading safety tips include:

1. Wear rollerblading protective equipment such as wrist guards, elbow pads and kneepads

Each item has its own specific safety function, and they are all designed to protect the main parts of your body from injuries and impact in case you fall accidentally. Not using these protective gears may result in a bruised knee or broken wrist or worse.

2. Learn the rollerblading basics first before you go on roads

To avoid accidents, you should practice the basics such as rollerblading forward, stopping and turning before you decide to rollerblade on the road.

3. Self-control and speed control matters

Be aware of your surroundings especially when you are rollerblading on the road. If you are rollerblading too fast and feel out of control, slow down.  You can count on an accident if you do not learn how to control your speed.

4. Watch out for road signs and road hazards

Watch out for potholes or cracks on the road, or for slippery oil or water patches.  These hazards might cause you to fall.

5. Always be courteous to fellow rollerbladers and pedestrians

You do not own the road; you share it with other rollerbladers, cars, bikes and pedestrians, so be polite and courteous.

6. Traffic rules should still prevail.  Of course always watch for cars and vehicles.  Don’t assume the vehicle is going to stop for you.

7. Make sure your rollerblades are in good working order and will not fail you in a pinch.

Follow traffic rules such as stopping at the red light when crossing the road in case oncoming cars do not see you.

Bear in mind that rollerblading is a great sport but could also be dangerous. As long as you keep the above safety tips in mind, rollerblading is a fun and enjoyable activity.
