Where can I find a rain cover or canopy for the toddler seat on the rear of my bike?

I've been looking around, and there doesn't seem to be a rain cover for my kid's bike seat, so the kid is going to get soaked next time it rains and we're out for a bike ride.

Its been suggested to get a trailer which will be under cover, but that's not really an option since I can't get through the gates near where we live with a trailer behind my bike.

I don't think one exists but how about the old school rain poncho that the kid can wear and it will also drape right over the seat. If you can't find one small enough then maybe modify one to fit. Good Luck.

The Symbol Of San Francisco: The Golden Gate Bridge

New York has the Empire State Building, and Washington DC has the Washington and Lincoln Memorials. Almost every major American city can boast at least one major masterpiece of architecture. In San Francisco, that emblem is the Golden Gate Bridge, recognized as one of the most graceful steel spans in the world. A tourist's visit to the San Francisco Bay Area isn't complete without a panoramic vista of this gorgeous structure. This isn't a feat of engineering; instead, it is a work of art.

To truly appreciate the Golden Gate Bridge, one must first have a solid grasp of the history that lies behind it. Conceived in the boom years of the Roaring 1920's but constructed during the depths of the Great Depression, the Bridge represents American perseverance and determination. The great project was completed in 1937, and the Golden Gate Bridge stood as the longest steel suspension bridge in the world until 1964, when the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was completed connecting the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The Golden Gate Bridge garners wide praise for its aesthetics. The American Society of Civil Engineers declared it to be one of the modern Wonders of the World. According to Frommer's Travel Guides, it's "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world."

Though the Bridge can be viewed from points across San Francisco, the best vistas are to be had from Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Surrounding the San Francisco Bay, the GGNRA is one of the most visited units in the National Park System. Over 13 million people come to this area each year to view the great red bridge, among other activities.

The Park is deceptively large, as it is not one contiguous land area, but rather a collection of parks that runs from northern San Mateo County down to southern Marin County. It runs along 59 miles of coast. The GGNRA shouldn't be confused, however, with Golden Gate Park, which is run by the city of San Francisco as a separate entity.

There is no shortage of things to do in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. On a warm summer day, it's not unusual to see people biking, rollerblading, and jogging on some of the countless well-maintained paths. In addition, photography is only one art form that is used to capture the majesty of the Golden Gate Bridge. Other artists employ paints, pencils, and sculpting clay to interpret the span.

A trip to the GGNRA isn't complete without a visit to its most infamous attraction. The island of Alcatraz has been the feature of countless movies. Although it hasn't housed prisoners since 1963, its since reopened as a museum. Its positively haunting to walk the halls of this chilling structure, once home to Al Capone and "Birdman of Alcatraz" Robert Stroud.

i have a go kart with a 5hp briggs. it runs excelent. but i have some few questions and ideas. i have a electric scotter and has 2 giant batteries. i was thinking maybe if i take those batteries and mount them on the back and power headlights and stuff with them and then plug it into the charger and night and charge the battery. i dunno if that will work or not. also i was thinking about taking a gear shifter off a bike so that when you are going in the go kart you can like put it into gear 1 and go slower but have more power and to go fast put it in like 7. i dunno if that will work but i thought it would be a great idea if you are trying to get up a hill and need more power or need to go faster.

AIDS Life Cycle Fundraiser

Last night (6/02/10) I went roller skating in Redwood City to help raise money for AIDS Life Cycle participants from UC Berkeley.  First of all, I would like to say that all of the people skating were absolutely fabulous.  It was seriously like an outtake from Blades of Glory.  Everyone was spinning and skating gracefully around the rink.  By the way, every Wednesday night at the roller rink in Redwood City, CA hosts a fabulous LGBT skate night (Rainbow Skate).

As a company, Pink Spots donated $200 in gift certificates from local restaurants (Cliff House Restaurant in San Francisco, Red Lantern Restaurant in Redwood City, La Hacienda in San Carlos, and Bursa Mediterranean Restaurant in San Francisco).  Raffle tickets for the gift certificates were sold at $5.00 each.  By the time the raffle occurred the team had raised over $800 for the Life Cycle participants.  Each participant has to raise $2,500 to participate in the ride which will begin this weekend.

As a company, Pink Spots was happy to be involved in the event and be able to help raise money for such a worthy cause.  AIDS prevention and education is so important within the LGBT Community and within the world community.  I would like to thank the participants of the AIDS Life Cycle for involving themselves in the challenge to fight AIDS and to raise awareness.  I would also like to wish all the riders the best of luck as they embark on their journey, which begins in San Francisco and ends in Los Angeles, CA.

Pith Helmet

The pith helmet (also known as the sun helmet, topee, sola topee, salacot or topi) is a lightweight helmet made of cork or pith, typically from the sola (Indian swamp growth, Aeschynomene aspera or A. paludosa) or a similar plant [1], with a cloth cover, designed to shade the wearer's head from the sun. Pith helmets were once much worn by Westerners in the tropics; today they are most frequently used in Vietnam.

Crude forms of pith helmets had existed as early as the 1840s, but it was around 1870 that the pith helmet became popular with military personnel in Europe's tropical colonies. The Franco-Prussian War had popularized the German Pickelhaube, which may have influenced the definitive design of the pith helmet. Such developments may have merged with a traditional design from the Philippines. The alternative name salacot (also written salakhoff) appears frequently in Spanish and French sources and comes from the Tagalog word salacsac (or Salaksak). Emilio Aguinaldo and the Philippine revolutionary military used to wear the pith helmet from the Spaniards alongside the straw hat and the native salakot during the Revolution in the Philippine-American War. Originally made of pith with small peaks (bills) at the front and back, the helmet was covered by white cloth, often with a cloth band (or puggaree) around it, and small holes for ventilation. Military versions often had metal insignia on the front and could be decorated with a brass spike or ball-shaped finial. The chinstrap could be in leather or brass chain, depending on the occasion. The base material later became the more durable cork (indeed, another common Spanish name literally translates as cork helmet), although still covered with cloth and frequently still referred to as "pith" helmets. This form of headdress is now associated strongly with the British Empire. However, the pith helmet was used by all European colonial powers, and during the 1880s even by the United States Army [2] in the south west. It was commonly worn by white officers commanding locally recruited soldiers in the colonial troops of France, Britain, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Imperial Germany and the Netherlands, as well as civilian officials in their tropical territories. White troops serving in the tropics usually wore pith helmets, although on active service they were sometimes replaced by more comfortable and less conspicuous alternatives such as the wide brimmed slouch hats worn by US troops in the Philippines and by British Empire forces in the later stages of the Boer War. Parallel to the development of the sun helmet, a broadly similar helmet, of dark blue cloth over cork and incorporating a bronze spike, was adopted for military wear in non-tropical areas, although it was rarely thought of as a true "pith helmet". Modelled on the German Pickelhaube, but distinctly different, this headdress was first adopted by the British Army (which called it the "Home Service Helmet") in 1878, followed by the United States Army in 1881. The British version was worn on most occasions by line infantry, artillery and engineers until 1902 when the introduction of khaki peaked (billed) caps relegated it to full dress. The blue cloth helmets worn by American mounted troops until 1901 were particularly elaborate, being decorated with plumes and cords in the colours (yellow or red) of their branches of service. The Home Service Helmet is still worn by some British Army bands or Corps of Drums on ceremonial occasions today. It is closely related to the custodian helmet still worn by a number of police forces in England. During the Anglo-Zulu War, British troops dyed their white pith helmets with tea for camouflage.[citation needed] Soon khaki-coloured pith helmets became standard issue for service as well. Pith helmets were widely worn during World War I by British Empire, Turkish, Belgian, French and German colonial troops fighting in the Middle East and Africa. Helmets of this style (but without true pith construction) were used as late as World War II by European and American military personnel in hot climates. Included in this category are the sun helmets worn in North Africa by Italian troops, South African Army and Air Force units and Germany's Afrika Korps, as well as similar helmets used to a more limited extent by U.S. and Japanese forces in the Pacific Theater. The entire military of the America's colony the Philippines, which consisted of an army and a gendarmerie, used sun helmets. The U.S. Marine Corps used pith helmets called "elephant hats" in the South Pacific. They were also worn by recruits in United States Marine Corps Boot Camp. The Axis Second Philippine Republic's military, known as the Bureau of Constabulary, as well as other guerrilla groups in the Philippines was another user of sun helmets. The British Army formally abolished the tropical helmet in 1948. Such was the popularity of the pith helmet that it became a common civilian headgear for Westerners in the tropics from the end of the 19th century. The civilian pith helmet usually had the same dimensions and outline as its contemporary military counterpart though it lacked decorative extras such as badges. It was worn by men and women, old and young, both on formal and casual occasions, until the Second World War. Until the 1930s there was a widespread assumption that wearing this form of headdress was necessary for people of European origin to avoid sunstroke in the tropics ndigenous peoples were assumed to have acquired natural immunity over many generations. Modern medical opinion holds that some form of wide brimmed but light headdress is highly advisable in strong sunlight for people of all races to avoid skin cancers and overheating. Another civilian use has been as a form of standard issue headgear for U.S. government employees in warmer climates. For example, in the U.S. letter carriers employed by the postal service frequently wear a government issued white (in some places light blue) pith helmet when delivering the mail on foot in climates such as South Carolina, Florida, Southern California, Arizona, and Hawaii. The Royal Marines still wear white "Wolseley pattern" helmets of the same general design as the old pith helmet as part of their number 1 or dress uniform. These date from 1912 in their present form and are made of natural cork covered in white cloth on the outside and shade green on the inside. Decoration includes a brass ball ornament at the top, helmet plate and chin chain. A similar headdress is worn by the Thai and Tongan Royal Guards as well as the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince of Monaco and by the Sri Lankan Police as part of their dress uniform. In the Philippines, some ceremonial units use sun helmets. British diplomats in tropical postings, Governors General, Governors and colonial officials continued to wear the traditional white helmets as part of their ceremonial white uniforms until the practice died out during the 1970s and '80s. The ceremonies marking the end of British rule in Hong Kong in 1997 were probably the last occasion on which this style of headdress was seen as a symbol of Empire. After World War II, the Viet Minh of Vietnam based their helmet design on the French pith helmet of the former colonial power and adopted it as their own. Today it is still widely worn by civilians in Vietnam but appears only rarely as part of the military uniform. In design, the Vietnamese model was similar to the preorld War II civilian type, but covered in jungle green cloth, sometimes with a metal insignia at the front or back. Sun helmets of plastic material but traditional design are still worn today by some mail carriers of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). White colored helmets with black ribbons (virtually identical to the one pictured above, belonging to Harry Truman) were the standard duty head gear used by highway traffic officers in the Dominican Republic's National Police up until the beginning of the 21st century, when these units were replaced by the creation of the Autoridad Metropolitana de Transporte (AMET) corps, who use dark green Stetson hats instead. If you remember the sitcoms of the 1950’s, you might think that the scenes portrayed were fiction. Those of us who lived our childhoods then know better. Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver and The Ozzie and Harriet shows were real examples of that time. The family was the center of daily life, children played outside and people frequently left their cars unlocked and their front doors open. It was a safe and carefree time. I consider myself lucky to have these childhood memories.

Dinner was our family’s social time when we gathered to share food and conversation. My father arrived home from work at the same time every day at 5:30 pm. Exactly at 6:00 pm we all sat down at the table for our meal. Conversations included school activities, household chores and upcoming weekend planning. We had no television and, if the radio was playing, it was musical background for our meal. No one was in a hurry and everyone helped with the clean up. After washing or drying the dishes, I sat down at the kitchen table and worked on homework until it was time for bed. Every week day was like the one before. Every day was wonderfully predictable. My home was a safe haven for the whole family. With my mother in her housedress and apron and my father at the head of the table, my home was as idyllic as the Anderson’s, Cleaver’s or Nelson’s homes.

The idea of television was just budding technology. We would not be able to stop it, but we hadn’t invited it into my home as yet. My after school hours before supper and my weekends and summers were spent outside. I proudly wore my shiny roller skate key on a string around my neck. My skates were not shoe-type roller skates. They were metal with a strap. The key was used to tighten the skates’ grip on the toes of my shoes. After hours of skating up and down the sidewalk, the grip loosened. Therefore, I had to reuse THE KEY to retighten my skates. My skate key was more of a trophy than a tool to me.

Besides skating, there was also sidewalk games to play. I was quite a pro at playing hopscotch which involved drawing a chalk diagram on the sidewalk that included numbers from 0 to 10. The object was to throw a small stone into each numbered box in succession and then to hop into all the other boxes except the one marked with the stone. I needed balance as on the way back to START, I’d have to bend over the stone on one leg, pick it up and return to the number 1 box without stepping on any lines. I played the game for hours either alone or with neighborhood friends. These outdoor games kept me moving all the time. They also made me adept at skating, hopping and balancing. This was physical fitness was all about in the 1950’s!

During summer vacation, I had months to have fun. In the 1950’s people did not worry about children being gone for hours without cell phones to keep in touch. When the community swimming pool opened for lessons at 7:30am, I’d be there learning strokes and dives shivering in the non-heated pool . Frequently I stayed at the pool for lunch, grabbing a quick hot dog or bringing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich , so that I would not miss a minute of free swim in the afternoons. I walked or rode my bike, two miles to and from the pool across busy streets and a variety of neighborhoods. I was in contact with numerous people, some friends some strangers, yet no one cautioned me about “danger stranger “ or abduction and murder. Swimming to the songs of the 50’s, I enjoyed those afternoons. I knew nothing about sun damage or skin cancer and was proud of my tan. Synchronized swimming to Sha Boom, Sha Boom for hours filled my summer days.

The 1950’s were called the post-war years. The soldiers returned and life resumed. The family bonds were strengthen, families grew. Fathers and mothers had roles in making home-life secure. Pre-television fostered a time for children to use their imaginations, to create activities, to use their bodies. Is good that I can recapture that era in my memories.

Great Tips for Your Romantic Date

Let us suppose that you want to take your partner on a romantic date.

Whether you are just starting to date and really want to make a good impression, or you have been dating for a long time, are engaged OR married, a romantic date is a great way to let your partner know just how special they are to you.

I think you'll find it easy to come up with your own, once your mind gets on the track and your creative juices start flowing.

As with the other ideas I've given you, some are more elaborate and some cost just a little money to execute, while others are totally free except for your effort!

So, feel free to pick one or more of these ideas, or change them a little to make them more personal for you and your partner.

Remember you have the answers to your questions about your partner to give you clues so you can decide which idea(s) will work best for your.

Once you get started, you will come up with all kinds of ideas of your own!

Rent a limousine and show up at your partner’s door, dressed in your finest to take her/him out for a surprise evening. If you can't afford the limousine, ask a friend to drive you in a rental car OR pay for them to have their car washed and have them drive you around throughout the evening date.

Bring a camera and take pictures of the places you go and of the two of you in the limousine or ‘rented car’. Bring a bottle of wine or champagne along as well.

If you live in a city that has commuter trains, you can buy two tickets on the train during off peak hours when it isn't crowded and bring along a picnic lunch.

Plan to stop at one or two interesting towns to go shopping, or share a cup of coffee in a nice coffee shop.

Engage some of your friends (preferably those your partner likes) and have them meet you in a street side deli or a public table in the mall to serve your food and drinks and act like waiters.

OR, have them come along to serenade your partner in the evening when you know he/she will be home.

You can print up booklets with love songs and everyone can sing them. If you want to get elaborate, you can assign parts for each person to sing. Just be sure your friends have good voices.

Create an entire evening of charades using sayings or statements you've written, or chosen from love poems or movies. As each charade is solved, your partner will get to hear the statement or line of love you created for him/her.

Take your partner on an old-fashioned date, ice skating, roller skating or going to a county fair.

You can really do it up right by bringing an old-fashioned box lunch or picnic basket for a local restaurant or caterer and buying flowers from a street side vendor.

Take your partner on a hot air balloon ride OR a helicopter tour of a lovely area. Pick him/her up in a car and insist that they wear a blindfold.

Bring a bottle of wine for the journey and don't reveal the special surprise until they are on board or as close to the craft as possible.

If you are in a city with horse drawn carriages or hansom cabs, plan to take a leisurely walk one evening after dinner, and grab a carriage to take you around the beautifully lit city or countryside.

Hayrides are also very romantic. Bring a blanket to lie on and one to cover you and a little bottle of cognac or schnapps to keep you warm!

Schedule a secret evening – don't tell your partner what you have in mind, and give her/him a ‘spa night’ to remember. From the moment they walk in the door, don’t let them lift a finger.

Draw a bath with lovely scented oils and candles in the bathroom, wash their back gently, play soft music, serve a glass of wine or hot mulled cider.

After the bath, serve a home cooked or take out meal as you choose, complete with candles on the table and special music in the background.

Push the furniture back against the walls and create your own dance floor, perhaps even decorating the living room like a romantic ‘dance club’.

Dance the night away and see where the mood takes you.

Involve your partner’s co-workers in your scheme and have them plan a working dinner either at a restaurant or calling for takeout to work on a project.

Then arrive with flowers, music playing on a portable CD and an outstretched hand to whisk your partner away from what they expected to be a hard evening of work.

Go to a little, out of the way restaurant – if you can find a new one that everyone thinks is great, so much the better.

Have the dinner ordered and ready to serve, so that your wine is poured and your dinner is served as if by magic with no orders placed and no waiting.

Fill your living room with dozens of candles and spread a blanket on the floor in front of the fireplace or the TV.

Light the candles and, when your partner arrives home, have a favorite romantic movie starting, the room lit with only candles and a fire burning, if you have a fireplace.

A bottle of wine or champagne and a small basket of flowers in the middle of the picnic blanket can add the finishing touches.

Many hotels have great weekend ‘romantic getaway’ rates. Rent a hotel room in a nice area of town where you can walk around and shop, go to the theater or browse in museums or just walk through the park.

Don't tell your partner where you are going, just tell them to meet you in the hotel lobby at a certain time (make it after check-in, so you can get checked in and bring all of your ‘tools’ up to dress up the hotel room).

Go to the hotel early, check in and place candles in the bathroom, and run a hot bath with bubble bath or bath oil. Bring a CD player and play some romantic music.

Light candles and place them around the bedroom as well. Now turn down the bed in the hotel bedroom and spread rose petals or other flower petals across the sheets.

Bring some massage oil and do it up right. After a relaxing afternoon in the hotel room, you can go out for dinner, walk in the park or go to a museum or play, as you wish.

Plan a day to pretend you are millionaires. Visit and tour homes you could never afford, test drive a Mercedes or Masserati and go to shops to try on clothes or jewelry you would never buy.

End the day with appetizers and drinks or just Tiramisu and coffee with Grand Marnier and stay in that millionaire frame of mind as you try to imagine just how the rich people treat their lovers and partners.

Stop at your favorite romantic restaurant or a new one you'd like to try and pick up a matchbook with their name on the front.

In a brightly colored ink, write a romantic message, asking your partner to meet you at the restaurant at a certain date and time and then leave it where you know they will find it.

Be sure to leave the cover of the matchbook open so your partner will notice the brightly colored message peeking out at them.

Then get to the restaurant early and bring a flower, order a bottle of wine and get ready for some romance!

Now that you have some ideas for dates, you can continue with more of your own, using these ideas every week, or every few weeks, to surprise your partner.

What is the difference between hard and soft knee and elbow pads?

The only hard pads I see in stores are in youth sizes. The only adult sizes I see are soft. Is there a significant difference?

It's as obvious as it it. One is hard one is soft. Hard probably gives more protection and soft would probably be more comfortable.

Double faced decals; what are they and how are they made?

The term decal is the shortened version of the word decalcomania.  A decalcomania was a decorative technique where artist images of prints and engraving, could be transferred onto pottery to decorate the stoneware. 

The invention of taking artist rendering from canvas and printing these images onto a medium to decorate ceramic pieces was attributed to Simon Francois Ravenet.  Simon was from France and he was an engraver who immigrated to England and after arriving in England circa 1750 he perfected this transfer process.

 

This printing process of decorating ceramic pieces was imported to the United States in about 1865.  In the United States this process was popularized during the ceramic decorating craze of the mid-1870s.  In the United States the word decalcomania was shortened to the version we use today decal.

 

The decals today are screen-printed on a plastic substrate produced with an adhesive to adhere to surfaces. The plastic substrates are legion and a few are household terms, we know as vinyl (AKA PVC), clear Mylar® or clear polyester is Mylar’s® generic name. 

 

There are 3 (three) types of decals, the first is known as face-up decal (printing industry jargon) also know as single faced decal with back adhesive for outside window mounting.  The second is known as a face down decal (printing industry jargon) also known as a single faced decal with face adhesive for inside window mounting.  The third kind is the double faced decal.  

 

 The first 2 (two) decal types are screen-printed, a type of printing that last in extreme environments and resist fading by the sun.  The 1st is the white vinyl or face-up decal can be used in many location adhered to windows, doors, lockers, notebooks, automobile bumpers.  The 2nd is the clear polyester is used to manufacture a decal with the adhesive on the face, so when the decal is applied to the inside of the window the image or graphic is visible from the outside of the window. 

 

The 3rd is the double faced decal is really a combination of the 2 (two) described above, using the white vinyl and the clear polyester as printed today. 

 

Until the middle of the 1980’s double faced decals where printed utilizing only a clear polyester product.  The double faced decals of this era were basically a build-up of ink on one side of the clear polyester.  The double faced decal has two images one that is seen through the adhesive side of the material and the 2nd image was printing over the 1st image.  If the decal was to be printed with red and blue on a white background and the message was “Hot Dogs Sold Here” this message was printing as a mirror image “ereH dloS sgoD toH” on the clear polyester as seen through the adhesive the image.  The 2nd face printed right reading bearing the same message “Hot Dogs Sold Here” was printed   on top of the message already printed, but with a silver opaque ink printed over the mirror image so the decal would not be translucent.  Because inks are not totally opaque the silver metallic ink was printed between the two images so when the decal is placed on a window you will not be able to see through the decal.

 

In 1979-1980 lead was eliminated as a component of screen print inks, by order of the Federal Government, screen-print inks had to be re-formulated without lead.  When screen-printers used the new inks without the lead component to manufacture double faced decals, the inks were no longer elastic so the inks crack because of the many layers of ink printed on top of each other.

 

So a new technology was invented and this new product was not an ink but a material known as a barrier film.  The barrier film is a plastic sheet with adhesive that is totally opaque so you can not see through this film.

 

The screen-printer uses this white vinyl barrier film and prints on the white vinyl as when they manufacture white vinyl decals.  Then the printer prints on clear polyester the 2nd image as a mirror image and then the printer laminates the clear polyester to the adhesive side of the barrier film, now you have two faces that read correctly. 

 

Double faced decals have a much cleaner presents on a window, because if a vinyl decal or clear polyester decal is employed and adhered to the window of a store or a home each of these will have a large white field facing toward the inside of the store or home.  The double faced decal has the image on both sides, thereby creating a pleasing advertising piece.
