Is Inline skating Rollerblading good for Ice Hockey?
I haven't Ice Skated in years, but recently got bitten by the Hockey bug again. I can't get skates yet, or get into Fall league. But I hope to play by the late Winter sessions once I can get equipment.
Anyways, I do have rollerblades for hockey, will this help my legs/ankles get stronger, and be a good workout for Ice Skating training? It's basically using the same muscles to push, and the balance is pretty similar? Or am I wrong? I've seen the Sedin twins train very intensely with inline skating in the off season.
I'm a very solid skater on roller blades, and was great on ice as a younger kid. Will I still fall on my face when I lace up Ice Skates for the first time if I train on blades good, and long? Will my ankles be a bending?
yes. It is very good to train with rollerblades. You will have no worries to any of those questions if you use rollerblades...The balance situation is different though. but its very good for your ice hockey to train on rollerblades...
-Yes rollerblades help for your legs and ankles.
-The balance is similar but i suggest you go to an open skate or two before your practice so your not too rusty...there is a difference some people can handle and adjust quickly to the change, some cant.
-&many hockey players grew up on rollerblades when it was too warm to play hockey...look where they are now.
-If you rollerblade and go on actual ice everyonce in a while you shouldnt worry about falling on your face...youll be finne.
-and no. your ankles shouldnt be bending at all...rollerblades will certainly help prevent that

Extremely Board
Skateboarding is back in the UK and this time, after a couple of false starts since it first emerged in the USA in the 50s, it looks like it is finally here to stay. It is bigger and badder than ever before and has spread its influence, not only into sports stores because of the range of skateboarding equipment available but into UK fashion, music and language. Local councils across the length and breadth of the British Isles are bowing to the growing pressure for more suitable skate parks to be provided and the number of kids taking up street sports is growing. Since ESPN and other sports channels have become more widely available in the UK, it has fueled their interest further.
The main difference between the skateboards that first hit the UK and those being used now is the level of skill that the riders aspire to from watching professionals taking part in the X-Games and other extreme skateboarding championships around the world. We are finally catching up. Awesome! Ask any self-respecting teen who Tony Hawks is and they won't say he is the bloke off the insurance advert but more a modern god of professional extreme sports. Among the hottest selling games for the various types of gaming consoles are those by the man himself and other titles that involve skateboarding. His range of skateboarding equipment is, not surprisingly, highly sought after by skateboarders and those who use aggressive skates, too.
Aggressive skating is also taking the UK by storm. The days of those dodgy roller skates with four wheels that you had to fasten red straps over your trainers or pumps, as they were then, are long gone. They were replaced by roller boots. Those were big in the 70's and 80's when roller discos and ankle warmers were all the rage. Roller blades then began to become popular. These were recreational inline skates that have retained a similar style ever since. Now, aggressive skates are also popular for those who want to perform tricks. What has changed dramatically is the aggressive style of skating and the ever daring tricks that the professional skaters pull off.
The essentials of skateboarding equipment are now more widely available than ever before. Prices have dropped to the point that boards, helmets, pads, aggressive skates and other accessories are within the budget of UK teens. It is not just the skateboarding equipment that is on the shopping list but also the clothing and music. No self-respecting boarder or skater would be without their cargo pants and beanies and Linkin Park and Avril Lavigne are sure to be on their mp3 player. While most of the skate boarding and aggressive skating scene in the UK was imported from the States, our teens can be proud to know that they started the baggy clothing scene and it traveled Stateside.

A Chef’s Knife or a Santoku Knife: Which is Right for You?
Brandon Luison
Editor in Chief
The fact that santoku knives are skyrocketing in popularity is without doubt. Each year these Japanese-style knives have been growing more and more popular with home cooks and chefs. An avid cook need only turn on the Food Network to see evidence of this cooking culture phenomenon in action – there he will undoubtedly see a celebrity chef, santoku knife in hand, slicing his way through a mound of vegetables and explaining how easy it is to achieve culinary perfection. This trend away from traditional (read French) chef’s knives begs the question: If santokus are used by celebrity chefs does that mean it they are right for you? The answer to this question is extremely important because it depends not only on the physical attributes of a cook but also on his lifestyle and social self.
Which kind of knife to buy is the one question that every serious cook must ask. Why? Because a cook’s knife (whether it be a traditional Western chef’s knife or a santoku) is the single most important purchase that a burgeoning chef will make. Every other knife and every other cooking product is just an accessory (except perhaps the skillet and the Dutch oven). The cook’s knife is the utilitarian workhorse of the kitchen. A cook will use his knife for more than eighty percent of his tasks – chopping, slicing, and dicing his way towards his finished product. In essence, the cook’s molds into the cook’s hand and transforms into a unique entity. Without a quality knife that he finds comfortable to use, the cooking experience greatly suffers. Thus, the importance of choosing the right kind of knife cannot be understated.
Physically Comparing the Santoku and the Chef’s Knife
A santoku is one to five inches shorter than the traditional chef’s knife, which typically measures between 8 -10” in length while the santoku is traditionally 5-7”. Its shorter length equates to a lighter knife and a reputation for nimble movements and swift chopping on the cutting board. The santoku’s blade is also straight and is level with the handle instead of dropping down as is so commonly found in traditional chef’s knives, which also happen have curved blades. Finally, santoku knives made of harder steel than their Western counterparts.
Now that a basic sketch of each knife’s physical specs has been made, you must decide if the lighter, shorter knife with the harder, flat blade (the santoku) or the longer, heavier knife with the softer, curved blade (the chef’s knife) is right for you. This is where your cooking history and your physical/personal characteristics come into play.
Your Cooking History
Is this the first time you are looking into a buying a cook’s knife? Or do you have a lot of experience with one of the types of knives, are in need of replacing it, and thinking about switching types? Or do you have a high quality santoku or chef’s knife in good condition and are thinking about purchasing the other kind to compliment the one you already own? These three questions lead to two different answers. A first time knife buyer or a cook that wants to compliment the knife he already owns by adding his knife’s “cousin” to his collection need not worry about his history and can skip ahead to the next section of this article. However, if you are looking to replace the knife you already own because it is either poorly constructed and delivers less than optimal performance or because its blade was accidently chipped, then you should reconsider switching types. A cook who has spent a lot of time cooking with a particular cook’s knife style becomes very accustomed to its performance attributes. A santoku displays a markedly different behavior on the cutting board than that displayed by the chef’s knife. Switching from one to other might frustrate a cook for a long while. Re-training your hand and cutting techniques is not impossible but will certainly take time. And there is always the slight possibility that you will not change your technique and the new knife’s qualities will be wasted. If you have the patience to reeducate your hand and to put with uncomfortable use for a short while, you should proceed with the article. If not, I suggest that you stick with type of knife you have. Nevertheless, if your hands are either large or small, or if you are either a vegetarian or eat a meat-based diet, than I suggest you also continue reading because you might be using the wrong kind of knife and should think about switching regardless of inconvenience.
The Size of Your Hand
As you can imagine the size of your hand is a very important factor. A cook with larger hands will find the santoku uncomfortably short and light if he is not used to using one and should consider switching if the need to replace his current knife ever arises. The reverse is also true – a chef’s knife will seem ungainly to a chef with slight hands.
Do You Rock? Or Do You Chop?
The curve of the blades found on traditional chef’s knives is prized because it enables the subtle rocking motion so often employed to mince ingredients. This smooth back and forth motion is quite difficult, if not impossible, to achieve with a santoku. If you like to rock the santoku might disappoint.
Conversely, the santoku excels at chopping which is the prepping technique of choice in Japanese kitchens. If you like to rock, in other words, the chef’s knife might be the one to disappoint. This is because the santoku is light, nimble and has a flat blade. While chopping vegetables, the beauty of the santoku in action makes a chef’s knife look like an elephant on ice.
Do You Finger Your Blade?
Many cooks (including your correspondent) like to hold their knife almost as if they are shaking a hand. They finger the top of the blade (which is thankfully also the non-lethal part). The santoku is perfect for this holding technique because its blade and handle meld into a seamless line. Fortunately, chef’s knives with a blade than is level with the handle can be found. If you, like me, like to finger the blade and decide on a chef’s knife, you simply need to search out those Western knives with the Eastern-styled handles.
Fries with That Burger? Or Salad with Those Fries?
Believe it or not, your diet lifestyle should play a significant factor in deciding between a santoku or a chef’s knife. It is probably more important than the size of your hands, your cooking history or even your cutting technique. This is because the Brinnel, Vickers, and Rocknell ratings (these are the various tests that determine the hardness of steel) are much higher the steel that santokus are constructed of. This harder blade leads to a sharper blade when compared to the softer chef’s knife. The sharper santoku is not always to the home cook’s advantage though. This is because it is more easily chipped and harder to maintain sharp than a chef’s knife (whose slightly softer blade is more forgiving when subjected to a sharpening stone). Therefore, a cook should avoid using santokus while cutting meat and should never use it to cut through bone.
The santoku was created in the culinary culture of Japan where the diet consists almost entirely of vegetables and fish. It is somewhat marginalized in the United States by the Western diet. Many people who purchase santokus (chef’s included) become disenchanted with them the moment their blade becomes chipped – which will happen if you use it cut through a lot of red meat and poultry. They were simply not designed for our caveman-like diet and our caveman treatment of food on the cutting board. American’s thrash through their ingredients while the Japanese tend to skate through it.
Yet, if you are vegetarian, there is simply no better cook’s knife option than the santoku. Its sharp blade will dance through your veggies for years and years. You will be amazed at its nimbleness – how the food you are chopping just dances off the blade, and the precision that its physical characteristics afford.
In Summary
The traditional chef’s knife is probably your best option if you have big hands, like to rock your blade on the board, and eat (and thus prepare) a lot of meat. Most importantly, if you are only going to have one knife and your prepare meat than the chef’s knife is for you. However, if you are a vegetarian, than the santoku is probably the right knife. The santoku outshines the chef’s knife with vegetables but is just not hardy enough to be the sole knife in a meat-eating cook’s cutlery repertoire.
Postscript
You still might be wondering why so many TV chefs use santokus. This is because the only “prepping” they actually is always vegetable related. They chop a lot of soft stuff. Believe me when I tell you that their off-camera serfs did not use santokus to get those steaks you are watching the chef sauté off of the bone. Also, even if some TV chef’s cut meat with their santokus, there are hundreds of free new knives waiting for use when the one being used is chipped.
Postscript Jr.
For your information, your correspondent uses a traditional chef’s knife. Why? Because I eat a diet that includes meat and right now I can only afford to have one premium knife. Although I finger my blade, I am also a rocker. In the end, I guess you can say that I have headed my own advice. Yet, I am planning on buying a santoku as soon as I can afford a really good one. Since vegetables take up the largest percentage of my diet, a santoku would really be handy and get a lot of good use in my kitchen.

How can I take good care of my ice skates?
I've had the same pair of ice skates since the 10th grade. I only get to go skating about 5 times during the winter months here, so I am not an avid skater at all, but I sure do love it when I do go!
I went skating earlier tonight and I have noticed that my blades have started getting rusty in little patches. I had the rink attendant sharpen my blades, and hoped that the rust would come off like that, but it didn't.
Any tips for the upkeep of my old skates? How should I take care of the rust? How often do I need to have the blades sharpened?
Any other tips on how to keep these skates for a while?
Thanks in advance!
its important when ever you get off the ice to dry both the blade and boot thoroughly to make sure you get all the execes water of. for the rust i dont know what to do but maybe get new blades ( the rust is fine) also remeber lay your skates out when you get home so they can air dry.this technique is also a good way for your skates not stink. also try getting some soakers

Replacing Swivel Chair Casters
Swivel chair casters offer mobility for office chairs. They come in different types made of various materials such as plastic, wood or metal. On many occasions it becomes impossible to roll an office chair. The casters can be stuck. This happens usually because the standard casters that come with the office chair are poor in quality. There are many places that offer a wide variety of swivel chair casters that are good quality. It is not that hard to replace or to change swivel chair casters. All you have to do is pull out the caster, get a new one and pop it in. They come in a wide variety of colors and style.
Swivel chair casters need to be durable and dependable. They include a friction ring and do not come with brakes. You can find gray and black office chair casters. They are 3-1/4 inches tall. These swivel chair casters are made of polyurethane and are safe for rolling on hard wood floors.
The skate wheel casters add a skate feel to your office environment. These swivel chair casters have authentic roller skating wheels that you would normally find on a skate board. These wheels work in conjunction with your chair for greater speed and mobility. These swivel chair casters are fun and colorful. They are translucent and inside they have colored details. You can find them in cool hues of blue and a variety of yoke combinations. Each caster is able to hold up to 100 pounds or around 50 kilograms. These casters do not have brakes.
If you do not want to break away from tradition and you want to keep a formal look to your office décor, then the classic office chair caster is the right match for your office setting. As always these swivel chair casters can be found in a variety of colors, each component of the caster has different colors and the casters are matched with the same components of different colors. These office chair casters can hold up to 100 kilograms per caster. Each wheel is made out of soft polyurethane tread. The diameter of the wheel is 64 mm or 3-3/8 of an inch.
If you want to add a twist to an old classic, use the ball style casters. The ball casters are made up with a yoke, but instead of a wheel they have a cylindrical design. They come in many colors and can be found in blue, clear/white or clear/gray combinations. The finish of the yoke is in chrome. The spheres are 2 inches in diameter and each sphere can hold up to 88 pounds.
If your office chairs are hard to move from one place to another, consider replacing them with new swivel chair casters. New swivel chair casters are of better quality than the standard casters the factory puts on your office chairs. There are many designs of casters in various colors and above all, they are durable and dependable.

Are we allowed to skate around the AMC center, Burbank High, etc. in Burbank w/o Helmets?
To start it off, I'm 13, and I was skating with my friend on that long bike path on Chandler Street, and after 2 seconds, just starting to ride, a cop kicks us off cuz we aren't wearing any helmets!
Anyways, ever since then, i have been wearing my helmet (if in Burbank) and the cops pass by me as if i were invisible. Some kids got busted for WALKING their scooters! But i pass by younger/older kids riding their scooter, skateboards, and roller blades, with no helmet or pads what so ever. And their like invisible to cops!
So, to get to the point...
Are we allowed skate/longboard around Burbank w/o Helmets?
California law states that any person under 18 riding a bicycle, skateboard, scooter or roller skates on a public right of way or public property is required to wear a helmet. Local laws can be enacted to require those 18 and over to wear helmets.

All About Skate Boarding
Skateboarding is one heck of a phenomenon, especially for the young ones. A recent study estimated that over twelve million people all over the world are involved in skateboarding, and more than one-third of all skateboarders are 18 years old or younger.
Skate boarding is technically defined as an activity in which one interacts with a skateboard. A skateboard is a platform with wheels that was originally conceptualized in the 1950s where skateboarding became a pastime for surfers whilst the surf in the sea were too low.
In those days, surfers disassembled roller skates and connected the wheels to planks of wood. This idea developed from the use of what they referred to as the crate scooters, that was in essence a transportation and a pastime piece of equipment that was created from a wooden crate that is attached to some kind of handle bars.
In the 1960s, skateboarding started to develop into a phenomenon. Manufacturers sold millions of skate boards which literally resembled surfboards. They marketed skateboards back then as an alternative to surfing. During the 1970s, skate boarding took a more serious turn as the materials used for the skate boards were upgraded from wood to more durable and bendable materials. Now, the skateboard is somewhat better than ever before, as millions of dollars are put into discovering the very best designs and materials to be used in manufacturing them.
Skate boarding is an exciting and a challenging activity at the same time. Many individuals utilise skateboards as a mode of transport. It can be a relatively practical method of getting across the city because skateboards are so inexpensive and small as compared to bicycles and scooters. You can acquire a skateboard at an extremely affordable price, even a kid should be able to purchase one from his allowance savings.
A lot of folks see skateboarding as being a serious activity which requires a lot of skill and talent. Several international competitive events such as the X Games provide venues in which the top skate boarders on the planet are able to show their stuff. Skate boarding can be simple, although when it comes to executing stunts and tricks, it's a whole different world all together. One needs the correct tuition and experience to have the ability to perform some tricks.
If we delve deeper into the arena of skateboarding, it really is unquestionably more than just a sport or a pastime, there is a culture that seemingly comes along skateboarding. Back in the olden days, skate boarding was mostly associated with the "rebel" culture. Skate boarders were typically given the impression of being rebels and dregs. However, as time passes by, skate boarding has been viewed as a serious sport and not a manifestation of rebellious angst.
Being taught the way to skate board is typically done in the streets. Most of the successful skateboarders that we have currently commenced their careers spending numerous hours of practice on the streets. It was sometimes not that they wanted to become good at skate boarding, but just that is how they enjoyed spending their time.
If you, or somebody whom you know is interested in skate boarding, there's absolutely nothing wrong with giving it a try. However, there are some serious precautions that need to be taken prior to doing the activity. Wearing the correct protection such as helmets, elbow and knee pads are recommended when skate boarding. They may possibly seem a bit bulky, but they will prevent one from having serious injuries in skateboarding. The dangers from the activity are real and shouldn't be taken for granted.

where can i buy an adult pair of roller skates? i want roller disco style Quad skates
?
not the ones with clamps, i want boot ones with laces
I've been skating for years, and I've found the best place for quads to be http://skates.com -- they're very fast, and cheap.
I'd recommend the Carerra skate if you're a beginner in quads. They're widely used and respected in the skating community, and not to mention one of the lowest priced quads you'll find while still getting great quality.
For wheels I've found http://lowpriceskates.com to be the best as far as selection.

Choosing skates for children
When looking to buy kids skates, there are several factors to consider. The first dilemma for those looking at roller skating options is whether to plump for inline skates (with wheels in a single line) or traditional ‘quad' roller skates (with two wheels on each row). Both can serve the beginner equally well, although, with practice, a more consistent speed can be more easily built up with inline skates. If opting for inline skates, it is usually more appropriate for a child to choose ‘recreational' ones rather than the more specialist and competitive ‘speed' or ‘aggressive' inline skates.
Roller skate size will usually closely match the child's normal shoe size. For a child whose feet are still growing it may be worth looking around for adjustable kids skates as these can be easily modified as and when a child's feet grow. If Ice Skates are the expressed interest of a child then a careful distinction will need to be made between those ice skates that are more suitable for figure skating; those that are designated as more general ‘recreational' ice skates; and those that are tougher and better designed to withstand the impact of sports such as ice hockey.
For ice skates, the choice of size is usually determined by opting for one size higher than the child's normal shoe size. Finally, whichever type is chosen it is imperative that full protective gear is worn whilst skating. This includes a helmet (which may of course require replacing periodically if a child is still growing); elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards. It is also strongly recommended that children take skating lessons.
At Skates.co.uk we offer the widest choice of designs and styles for kids skates at extremely competitive prices, and we will be happy to offer free expert advice on all your skating queries.

The Recognition Of The Hot Rod In Automotive Art
Once upon a time, only a few years ago, if you went to an art exhibition like the Saturday night AFAS show preceding the Pebble Beach Concours, all you saw depicted was classic cars, mostly prewar cars like Duesenbergs, Bentleys, etc.
Then depictions of muscle cars started creeping in, on cat's feet so to speak, but this was inevitable because some of the greatest car artists of our time are former ad illustrators like Art Fitzpatrick who painted the immortal Pontiac Grand Prix and GTO illustrations. At age 20, he was already working with Howard "Dutch" Darrin, designing the 1940 Packard four-door.
Tom Fritz , of Ventura, CA, was one of the first American fine artists to "break the mold" and depict the cars he grew up with;not LeTourneau et Marchand Bugattis but good ol' hot rods he saw on the streets of San Fernando, an LA suburb. Tom's vivid childhood recollections of the motorcycle and automotive cultures prevalent in Southern California during the 60's and 70's are reflected in his work.Among his clients are Harley Davidson and his paintings hang in many corporate collections and museums including the NHRA Museum.
And then, just like out on the lawn of Pebble Beach, hot rods appeared. Oh, the painters, many of them, were familiar with hot rods, heck many either owned or lusted after the '32 Ford "Deuce" roadster in their youth but never wanted to admit it in polite company at events like Pebble Beach where the talk was all of Hispano-Suizas, Erdmann and Rossi 540Ks, James Young Phantoms and the like.
But now the secret is out. We all be hot rodders. Because fundamentally a car is a car and if it's mechanical we love it.
The depictions of hot rodding that have appeared in fine art so far are steeped in history—say paintings of hot rods being run at the dry lake beds where hot rodders raced them even before WWII. More modern setting depictions are rarer though recently there has been a blossoming of "cruise-ins", impromptu car shows, at places like drive-in restaurants nationwide.
And then there's the problem of the commercial cliché—if you show a hot rod in a drive-in restaurant (like the kind where the waitresses rolled out on roller skates to take your order) then you risk painting something that commercial retro-theme restaurants are still currently exploiting.
And once you've opened Pandora's box, how far do you go, because there's a deep dark secret about hot rods. Now neat and clean hot rods are one thing, but deep down if you research the genre, you find out there's another vein of hot rodding called the "rat rodding." Because back in the day hot rodders had enough money to buy Smitty mufflers or Rajo axles but didn't have enough money to paint the car so they ran them in flat primer. There's a whole subtext/genre of hot rodders who have no intention of ever finishing their cars to normal "finished car" standards. To them, it is an outlaw statement on four wheels to leave it unfinished.
Call it being "in your face."
One of the first books to show this side of the car world was the artful softbound Hot Rod by Barry Gifford with David Perry taking the pictures of rough cars built by some rough looking ("wife beater" t-shirts and lots of tattoos) dudes. Perry also wrote the movie Wild at Heart. This book captures the era when driving a hot rod made you a "bad dude" --almost as bad as riding a Harley.
There was a real life example of hot rod meets fine art that I saw a couple years ago at the AFAS tent at Pebble at their party. It was when Chip Foose, a young designer who has worked for the Detroit automakers but who now is famous for his hot rod designs, drove up to their tent in a Ford roadster –the car full of aeroplane parts like exhausts from a WWII fighter!
The artists poured of the tent to see his hot rod and there was plenty of admiration expressed—indicating that, deep down in many an American-born artist famous for depicting classic cars is a hot rodder who knew the names Bill Cushenberry, Dean Jeffries and Gene Winfield long before he ever heard of Sergio Pininfarina or Giorgetto GIugiaro….

Speed Skating training troubles.?
Mkay. Here is my problem. Im skating a road course that is 4miles to the end of the road and 4miles back to the start. Im skating 2-3 "Laps" once a day... So I have been noticing that I always hurt, and skating the road is getting a lot harder. Not easier. And indoor is getting even more difficult. And Everyone is telling me that it should be getting EASIER. And I should be getting faster. And Im having troubles keeping up with a kid that is 2 divisions younger than me! Is there something Im doing wrong?
Do you have wide feet? Get your feet measured by a place that sells skates and see if you need a wider skate. You may get to go down a size too which will fit your feet better. I happen to be a 4E meaning wide times 4. So I always bought longer skates and didn't have as much control and my feet still hurt after less than an hour of skating.
