I love ice skating and figure skating and want my own skates. I don't have much money and want really cheap ones. I know you get better quality ones if you pay more but tbh i don't really care about the quality. I was looking for a good website with cheap figure skates and cheap p&p (postage and packaging) as well. Does anyone know any good websites or shops in the uk (thats where I live) ?

The synthetic ice buyer's guide - What is important when buying a synthetic Ice rink?

Synthetic ice is a perfect concept which can save millions of tons of CO2 worldwide and allow people to enjoy skating without tremendous energy expenses. However, there are nowadays many suppliers, seller and resellers of synthetic ice in the market with varying qualities. This is creating confusion among synthetic ice buyers.  Since the concept is new, many buyers do not know which factors are important when selecting the right product.

Therefore, the objective of this synthetic ice buyer's guide is to provide help in the buyer's decision process to make sure they choose the right product and supplier.

Choosing the right product:

1.) Low Coefficient of friction: This is the single most important attribute of synthetic ice. The lower, the better the quality of your ice rink. This has 3 main effects :

a. High gliding ability: It has to be as close to conventional ice as possible. Gliding ability is what makes ice skating a fun sport, you feel weightless and can slide without effort. If people don't have that much fun skating, you will have less repeating customers, no word of mouth. Hence, high gliding ability is the single most important key success factor of a skating center and guarantees higher revenue.

b. c. Low panel wear off: The better the quality, there is less abrasion and shaving off of the panels. This increases the durability. If the quality of panel material is of low quality, skating can produce a lot of worn-off particles which can produce undesirable littering around the rink and in the whole establishment. Also these unwanted particles have been reported to stick to cloths. The panels have to maintain a clean and proper look, without to deep scratches. Even if still the ice is still functional, a messy looking rink doesn't invite for skating.

2. The way how the ice responds: So that synthetic ice is a true alternative to conventional ice, the ice has to responds to the skate movement exactly the way like ice. For example when doing a hockey stop, many synthetic ice have a longer trajectory than conventional ice. High quality ice responds like ice with all movements and has the same edge control.

3.) Muscle usage identical to ice: On many synthetic ice rinks, the way muscles are used when skating is different than on conventional ice. A high quality surface allows the use of the same muscles and in the same way.

4.) seamlessness of connection system: The connection system of the panels has to be tight, seamless and effective, not allowing the panels to be loose. There are different system in the market.

5.) None toxic ingredients: some suppliers use toxic material such glycol for the gliding liquid which can be harmful for children and the environment.

Choosing the right supplier:

6.) Good References: The supplier should have extensive experience building synthetic ice rinks, especially the type, size and use you plan to build. Find out about the competence of the clients buying the product, the more expert they are, more you can trust the product they have bought. Talk with clients who have bought the same solution.

7.) Rink Management experience. The supplier has to be competent in the field of rink management and provide help and consulting, especially when there is no experience on the side of the buyer. 9.) Truly environment friendly: Make sure that the material is 100% recyclable and none toxic. Today I got new ice skates. They are Riedell F117 size 9 skates. And I am getting a Zuca Bag for Christmas. I was just wondering if the skates will fit in the Zuca bag. Because my friends' bag looked pretty small. So would they fit???

Hi. I think your skates will fit inside a zuca bag. I have a zuca bag but i don't use it anymore because I didn't feel like using it anymore and I thought it was too bulky, but I store my old skates in it which are about a size 7 and they fit and my best friend has a zuca bag and fits her size 9 skates in it. When I used mine, I couldn't keep much inside it so I kept everything in the outside pockets. Good luck.

Choosing Clothing For Ice-Skating

After you have acquired your boots and skates, your thoughts will turn naturally to the clothes you will wear for your first appearance. Make no mistake about it; a smart costume on the ice is half the battle. If you are a man, you will probably decide to do your first skating in long trousers plus an ordinary coat or sweater, and that is all right. If you are a woman and an absolute beginner and expect to do a certain amount of rail clinging for a while, you will probably think you will be less conspicuous in a long skirt, a sort of modified street costume. There you are wrong.

For a woman the traditional costume is as set for the ice rink as it is for the tennis court or the ski slope. A long skirt will make any woman stand out like a sore thumb on any ice surface, just as a long black skirt would make her an object of special attention on any tennis court. So remember this when you buy your costume: if you want your first few wobbly strokes to go as unnoticed as possible, be sure to dress in the accepted mode. If you dress like a reasonably expert skater (whether you are or not), you'll find that people are much too preoccupied with their own edges to pay any attention to yours.

The accepted style for skating skirts and dresses has a full circular, gored, or pleated skirt which flares from the hipline. Plenty of stores now have the most chic, correct, and practical costumes imaginable - and at very small cost. In fact it is because the stores are putting out such attractive and becoming figure skating outfits that lots of young girls are taking up the sport!

As for the rest of the costume, good sense and a certain amount of fashion should dictate. Most rinks are heated nowadays, so it is well to inquire first. On the other hand, trim windbreakers, parkas, and turtleneck sweaters are perfect for pond skating. Big hats are out of place on the ice. The closer fitting the cap, the trimmer the appearance. Streamlining is as suitable to the skating figure as it is to an automobile chassis.

Anything that doesn't contribute to an impression of speed and freedom of movement is undesirable. That is why the bodices of skating dresses should be molded to the figure. That is why trunks should never be large and bulky - but, contrary-wise the too tight, too high little panty that some good skaters are now affecting is ugly, too. Trunks should as a general rule match the skirt and be as inconspicuous as possible. Excellent nylon tights are available at most stores, while wool and nylon tights may also be procured. The latter are fine for outdoor skating in cold climates.

ok so I have this new found intrest in figure skating! I love to watch it on you tube and my friends make fun of me. ;( haha but I would really like to try it because i like dancing and all...anybody know if they give basic lessons at skating rinks? and anybody else like to watch skating on you tube? lol

Start with your local rink. Almost every rink offers a group lesson program, even in the summer. It's inexpensive and you can make a lot of friends who won't laugh at you!

Many rinks also offer summer day camps. In addition to skating lessons and practice time, the camps include off-ice exercises and dance sessions, which you'd probably be great at doing! Plus, they watch videos to learn more about "How do they do that?" Some even videotape the campers and review their progress throughout the week!

If you like the idea, try it! Group lessons aren't that expensive. Just make sure you pick out decent skates, so you'll have more fun. Weak/crummy skates hurt and are hard to use.

You need to seriously think about your attire after having done all the hard work and undergoing rigorous training for a bodybuilding competition. The History Of Ice Skating

Although ice skating has a long history it is pretty much impossible to know exactly when and where it was born. It is known that the sport began in Europe and then the Americans adapted figure skating just before the civil war.

At this time a dancing and skating craze was sweeping America and all anyone wanted to do was put their Ice Skates on and have fun. It was Jackson Haines who revolutionised figure skating in America because what was once a stiff and rigid style had now become daring and exciting with his combination of skating and dancing.

Local skating clubs had been formed and competitions had been held since the middle of the 19th Century but it was a long time before figure skating became a recognised sport. However, more and more people were putting their ice skates on and the sport was becoming so popular that the United States Figure Skating Association was formed in 1921.

The sport has come a long way since the 1920s however. At that time there were only seven charter member clubs of U.S figure skating whereas there are now more than 600 member clubs across the country. As well as this, in the 20s there were no standards for skating, anyone could put on their ice skates and if they felt that they were good enough to qualify then they would. This is dramatically different from the sport today as candidates now have to undergo a series of tests and challenges in order to compete.

Perhaps one of the reasons why figure skating has progressed so much is because ice skates themselves have developed and become a lot easier to use. Ice skates were traditionally made from animal bones which would not have been very ideal for figure skaters who need to be able to move around a lot so they can do turns, jumps and acrobatics. Ice skates became a lot better for figure skaters in 1848 when the first all steel clamp was invented. This was shortly followed by the introduction of the two plate all metal blade. The blade was attached directly to the boots which made dance moves, jumps and spins possible. In the 1870s the first toe picks were added to ice skates which made toe pick jumps possible for the first time.

It is undeniable that ice skates and the sport they belong to have come a long way over recent years and have become a very enjoyable activity to watch.

I am wondering how figure skating or ice dancing or gymnastics are considered sports in the Olympics? These are performances, not sporting events. The performers must be very talented and skillful but I can't understand why it is called a sport?

If these are sports, then singing, dancing, juggling, and opera should be sports too.
Isn't a sport defined as a game or race or other athletic competition?
