Winter Sports - Speed Skating

A lot of risk is involved in this sport  and hence it should not be practiced withoutproper training.  It is a very interesting sport and we can enjoy watching speed skating in the Winter Olympics.  The name of the sport itself indicates that it involves high speed that is more than 30 miles per hour.  More speed means that the injuries are also going to be more disastrous powerful-.  Never try to pursue this game on your own as it may lead to great disasters and might even  put your life at risk.  

Safety Equipment

Safety equipments are necessary for all kinds of winter sports including speed skating.  Safety gear is very important and it has to be worn throughout the event.  Usually safety gear consists of a helmet, elbow pads and kneepads that provide safety and reduce the risk of injuries.  Always use the ice track instead of a  frozen pool.  Ice rinks are mainly designed for the purpose of speed skating and it would be safe to practice the game on them.

Types Of Races In Speed Skating

You can find many different types of races in this kind of winter sports.  Usually in professional speed skating, you will find pairs of competitors on the ice track.  There are two lanes in each track.  Each person in a pair is provided with a specific color band.  At a given point, the skaters will have to change lanes.  The colored band helps the judges to identify that the skaters were in  which lane when they started in the beginning.  It also helps to ensure that same amount of distance is covered by both  the skaters.   
In the other case, if the race is between a pair of teams then they are positioned on the track at different locations.  This is done to avoid their coming in each other's way .  The judges track the time and distance covered by each pair of team.
You will find one more type of racing in winter sports known as marathon speed skating.  Here you will find that all the participants start from the same location and they try to get ahead of each other.  Generally, there is a lot of pushing and bumping involved in the process.

Types Of Skates In Speed Skating

As there are various events involved in the winter sports, the type of event determines the type of skates that you have to use in speed skating.  You can find the regular ice skates, however if you are planning forlong distance speed skating then clap skates will be the ideal choice for you.  It consists of a hook on the boot attached to the blade.  As the blade has a continuous contact with the ice this hook assists the skater to get more control over the skates and allows him to move faster.

The increasing popularity of speed skating is encouraging more and more people to participate  in this event.  However if you want to engage in this sport then firstly you have to choose the right skates for the particular type of skating event that you prefer.  Then make sure to wear all the safety equipments and take all the precautionary measures meant for winter sports.

Best entry-level speed skates/boots (ice & inline) for beginners?

Hey guys,

I wanna get into inline speed skating AND short track speed skating (ice). Obviously, since I'm a beginner, inline has to come first before I try ice. I've skated (...okay, not really -- I was mostly on my butt) inline before and loved it, so I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy ST, too. I've heard that certain boots allow you to change from wheels to ice blades -- is this true? I really can't afford to buy two different types of skates at this point, so having boots like that would be perfect. So with said, what are the best entry-level (hopefully changeable) speed skates/boots for a beginner? Thanks a bunch.

The standard mounting for ice blades is 6.5" (165mm).
It used to be the standard for inline race frames. Unfortunately, it puts the screw in a bad place for 4x100mm wheels and the skate makers have been moving to 195mm spacing or replacing the second wheel with a 90mm wheel to allow space for the mounting screw.

If you are buying an inline skate with the plan to swap to an ice blade later, you should look at the mount spacing on the skate.
If you buy an ice boot and then add the blade and inline frame, you will have a reduced set of frames available but Bont even makes an adapter to mount 195mm frames onto 165mm boots.

The inexpensive way might be to buy a complete inline skate that has the proper mounting length. It is cheaper to find completly set up skates than buying the pieces.

Rollerblade and K2 both make intro racing skates but I don't know the mounting distance.

Bont makes intro inline racing skates (they are primarily more advanced skates) but they use a new 3 point (between each wheel for 100 mm frames) mounting system that I doubt will be useful for ice blades.
They also make entry level to full custom ice boots with the proper spacing for ice blades (and some inline frames).

The important thing is to find one or more shops in your area that sell them. Racing boots are less forgiving of wrong shape or size than recreation/fitness boots. A knowledgable shop can heat mold racing boots to fit your feet.

I recommend finding other inline or ice racers in your area to find out who sells the skates. Some of the better shops may be an enthusiast working out of their house. You may not find them in the phone book but the people in the sport will know about them.

Types of Ice Skates

With sports such as ice hockey and ice skating being one of the most popular forms of entertainment all around the globe, ice skates are nothing new to the average individual.

Boots having blades attached to the bottom and used to propel a person across the sheet of ice is called ice skates. There is a crescent shaped hollow creating two sharp edges on the bottom of the Ice Skate. The depth of this hollow (Radius of Hollow) varies with the ability, strength, weight and activity of the skater as well as the type of sporting activity and style of play.

Some skates like speed skates and touring skates that do not have a hollow bottom, have an efficient glide but it cannot cut ice effectively.

There are different types of ice skates:

Figure skates: This type of ice skates is specifically used in figure skating. Figure skates are leather boots with steel hollow ground blades extending an inch past the boot and small heel. In front of the blade there are toe-picks made of aluminum or steel. Toe-picks are used for certain jumps like ‘toe loop’, ‘Lutz jump’. Several layers of leathers are used to make figure skating boots. The stiff layers of leather provide ankle support to the skater. There are also vinyl boots for the beginners that are cheaper than leather. Recreational ice skates may appear like figure skates but they do not have the padding or support required for figure skating. These skates are made for those who simply skate for pleasure.

Hockey Skates: Ice hockey players mainly use this type of ice skates. These are made of synthetic leather, molded plastic or ballistic nylon. Hockey skates look like athletics shoes that angle the feet forward. The blades are almost as long as the boot and curved at front and back. This is to allow the player comfortable movement on all sides. The skates must be strong and durable to withstand the battering from hockey sticks, pucks and other players’ skates. Ice hockey players have their skates on for longer periods than figure skaters. Hence the ice hockey skates are padded and designed to give the comfort and support akin to the best 'running' shoes. The goaltenders of ice hockey use a special type of hockey skates- ‘Goalie skates.’ The ankle of such ice skates is lower than hockey skates to let the boot remain closer to ice. The boot is protected by hardened plastic. The blade is generally longer with a low curvature that helps in easy side-wise movement.

Bandy Skates: This type of ice skates are used for playing rink bandy and bandy. The boot is lower than hockey skates and made of synthetic leather. The blade is also a little longer than ice hockey skates to achieve and maintain higher speeds. Design of bandy skates are such that it does not injure the players.

Speed Skates: Speed ice skates are also called racing skates. These are completely different from figure skating and recreational skates. The design is to maximize speed while driving forward. The blades of such skates are longer than the boot and flat in shape to help glide forward. The type of speed skates where Skate Blade detaches from the heel to aid forward momentum when the skater is skating is called ‘slap blade.’ The boots of speed skates are made of lightweight leather or any such flexible material that allows foot movement during skating.

Touring Skates: The long blades that can be attached by bindings to hiking or cross-country ski boots are called touring skates. Such ice skates have long blades with a flat cross section making it stable. Such ice skates are mainly used to walk between lakes and non-skating sections. These are mainly used by mountaineers and trekkers and for non-competitive touring. The blades, which can be easily removed from the shoes when not in use, makes them particularly useful to the owner.

Differences between Harlick and SP Teri custom boots?

I have an old pair of sp teri customs that were like the super teri deluxe with MK professional blades. They are old 10+ years. I was able to do all single jumps and was learning an axel and double jumps. I now am skating again but ice time is limited due to lack of a year round ice rink. I may need to go to less stiff boots as I will otherwise never break these boots in.I have very wide flat feet and narrow heels. Trying to decide if I want to stay with SP teri or try Harlick customs. Current boots now pinch on the instep at the ball of the foot and feel too narrow, and short. I am unable to wear stock boots, as I have tried in the past with SP teri and it was an expensive mistake. My current coach has experience fitting both.

Also would anyone recommend upgrading my blades to something like a Vision/phantom etc.

Any comments about K pick or parabolic blades based on experience with using them?
Please help!

I skated in custom Harlicks for about 10 years. I found them to be very comfortable. They only downside is that they are kind of heavy and difficult to break in. These days I skate in SP Terri's and I really like them, they're not too heavy and fit my feet well. I got them used and they were only broken in just a little bit; it was great not having to break them in. If you're concerned about breaking in new skates you may want to try something like a Jackson, it's my understanding that they're a little easier to break in. If you need to stick with custom boots I'd stick with the SP Terri's, you already know they work with your feet.

If you're coming back to skating after a 10 year break after a 10 year break you may find that you need to start from scratch and not be where you thought you might - it happened to me and I was very surprised. You might want to see if you can use your old blade until you get back to where you were. I picked up new Coronation Ace blades (they're suitable for doubles) and they worked really well for me.

Is "bladerunner" a good brand for ice-skates?

I've been in a recreational ice-skating program for two years, and now I want to take lessons. I own a pair of girls Hockey Skates - they work well (but I need to own a pair of figure skates).

Right now I'm considering either the "bladerunner aurora" or something from "lake placid" or "riedell". Even though I'm a beginner I want to buy a pair of good quality skates that will last me a long time!

Out of the skates you are considering, I would definitely go with the Riedell brand if you are looking for something with high quality that will last you a while.

If you are a beginning skater, you should check out their Recreational Series (RS) - models there are the RS 110, RS 115, RS 117 and the RS 121. They are all well built, and will last you through the beginning stages of figure skating before you need to upgrade to a stiffer boot. If you are starting to look into freestyle skating, and beginning to jump, you may need to look at a higher-grade, stiffer skate, which Riedell also makes.

On the Riedell website, you can also look at skate recommendations by test level (the way to do this is on the bottom of the web page I listed below - very easy!). Since I don't know what level you are at or what you are currently working on, it is hard to make a concrete sort of recommendation beyond that you should strongly consider Riedell skates above the other two options you listed. They may be more expensive, but that is made up in quality very quickly, as well as how long the skates will last you. Riedell's figure skate website can be found here: http://ice.riedellskates.com/

One last thing - when you go to purchase skates, please go to a skating pro-shop to do it, not an online site or "big box" athletic store - pick one that also carries very high level competitive skates as well, or get a recommendation from one of the coaches at your local ice arena - find out where they go to get skates, and go there. Buying skates without having them fitted by a knowledgeable person is definitely asking for trouble! You are in a girls size 4 skate/shoe, but figure skate sizes run quite differently. I am currently using Riedell skates (and I have for the past 14 years), and my skates run almost 2 sizes below my shoes. Other factors, such as your height, weight, and the amount of time you spend on the ice can make a huge difference in what model of skate is going to work best for you.

You don't want to wear thick socks (tights or nylons or very, very thin socks only), and you don't want to have much extra room in your skates - they should fit very close to your foot in order to give you the right amount of stability and support. If you buy the skates too large they will break down faster, and you are also very likely to develop some pretty miserable blisters, which is no fun at all! So, get your new skates only after a fitting to determine the proper size first!

How To Make The Ice Hockey Team

This game is going into overtime, as many of your games will when the offense and defense have been about equal. The team that puts out that little extra in overtime will usually win, and the player who knows some little extras will certainly have a start in earning his place on the team.

You and Your Position

At team tryouts, most coaches will ask a player what position he prefers to play. Then as the team takes shape, some changes may have to be made. Maybe you started out as a center but are asked to switch to left wing. Your attitude is being tested. If you tell your coach that you will play any position he says and if you pitch in and try to learn all about playing left wing, you are hockey material!

If asked to switch positions, you should understand that, as you grow older, larger, and stronger, you develop certain hockey skills that may fit you better for a position other than the one you used to play. Also, in forming the team, your coach can see where your strong points best fit into the style of play he plans to use.

Besides, it is good for boys in their early playing days to get the experience of playing two or three different positions. You learn more about positional play this way; you also get training in the different skating techniques of wings, centers, or defensemen.

It might help you to have an idea of what a coach looks for in selecting players for the various positions.

GOALTENDER. A coach usually starts his search for a goalie by screening players on the basis of their quickness and their catching ability. To be quick, a boy must have good balance on skates first and fast reflexes next. Size is of no importance, provided the player has these assets.

DEFENSEMEN. Traditionally, the two defensemen were the big, heavy body checkers, who were the slowest skaters on the team. This is not true any more. Against modern power play offensives, these men have to be very mobile skaters, who handle the puck well. They also should be rugged and aggressive, with the ability to check hard.

WINGMEN. The right and the left wings are the workhorses of the offensive line. They must be fast, hard skaters since they will be called upon to do more straight ahead, stop-and-go skating than other players on the team.

CENTER. This man is the key to a good offense. He should have the knack of passing both accurately and at the right time. He should know the styles of his wingmen - what moves they like to make when breaking over the blue line or going around the opponent's net.

Above all, the center should be the production man of both goals and assists. He should have a good sense of position play and the ability to shoot quickly and straight.

A valuable skating skill for this position is the ability to whirl into fast turns either way with no loss of time. The center should be a figure in perpetual motion, skating, circling, breaking, and turning constantly.

Many coaches like to assign the chief job of fore checking to the center. He then must be able to check well before his opponents have a chance to break out of their own end.

A hockey coach faced with the job of picking a team once asked another coach how he would go about the task.

"I'd choose my goalie first and then pick the 18 best hockey players from the rest, regardless of what positions they played," the second coach replied.

"On what basis do I do that?" asked the first.

"Pick them on the basis of speed, desire, and hockey brains," answered the second, ably summarizing the most important qualities of an outstanding hockey player.

Which skates would you guys recommend.?

Riedell Blue Ribbon Figure Skates or Riedell Soft Ice Skate?

The reason I am asking is because everyone that I have asked as recommended both. Just wondering which ones you guys would choose.

I have Jacksons, and most really good skaters have Jacksons. Riedell is....Ok. Jacksons are more expensive, but they are Custom Made, and they last longer. I used to have Riedell, but they got scratched up really easily. Jacksons, like all skates, will hurt at first, and even though they are custom made, it still is a good idea to "cook/bake" your skates. Ask a coach about cooking/baking skates. I really wouldn't recommend Riedell for medium to great skaters. Jacksons really are the better of the bunch, but always remember that its not the skate that makes the person, its the person's skill and talent.
