Taking a Careful Approach to Treatment for Sports Injuries in Children
With the rise in childhood obesity in the United States looming over the heads of millions of parents, many are encouraging children to become more active through daily play and recreational sports. Children as young as three participate in a wide variety of physical activities including all types of dance, football, baseball, swimming, soccer, martial arts and much more.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) approximately 3 million children and adolescents ages 14 and under are hurt every year playing sports or participating in recreational activities and the majority of organized sports-related injuries (60 percent) happen during practice. With nearly 30 million children playing team sports or engaging in recreational activities regularly, 3 million injuries annually is a big number.
Among the injuries most likely to occur, you will find the following: sprained ligaments, strained muscles, stress fractures, heat injuries, bruises, dental injuries, and head injuries. The most severe of these is the head injury. When there is a death related to childrens sports activity it will most likely happen because of a brain injury and chances are, the child will have been skating, skateboarding or on a bike at the time of the injury.
The death of a child due to any injury sustained while engaging in sports or recreational activities is very rare. More often than not, any pain or injury a child gets playing sports is relatively minor and can be treated at home using simple pain relief measures.
While some pediatric sports injuries will require medical attention, there are common injuries that can be taken care of from home. Bruises, sore muscles, scrapes and cuts can all be handled at home using simple remedies like an ice pack, a heating pad, and even over-the-counter pain medication. Older children, especially teenagers who participate in junior varsity and varsity contact sports like football, soccer, basketball and baseball, can take advantage of deep-penetrating topical creams for pain.
The best places to get the most effective topical creams for pain relief are from chiropractors' offices or from the office of a physical therapist. Mass retailers, like WalMart and Walgreens, sell some prescription strength products over-the-counter. One that we found on a WalMart shelf is Blue-Emu, a topical cream that claims to soothe bruises, sore muscles and more using, among other key ingredients, Emu Oil. A little research showed that the Aboriginal people of Australia have long used Emu Oil to cure a myriad of aches and pains. For older child athletes, a strong topical cream may be just what they need for sore muscles.
According to the AAP, children between the ages of 5 and 14 account for roughly 40 percent of sports-related injuries for all age groups. While we want to encourage children to live active, healthy lifestyles we also need to be certain that we are taking every precaution to ensure their safety as they play.

A Chef’s Knife or a Santoku Knife: Which is Right for You?
Brandon Luison
Editor in Chief
The fact that santoku knives are skyrocketing in popularity is without doubt. Each year these Japanese-style knives have been growing more and more popular with home cooks and chefs. An avid cook need only turn on the Food Network to see evidence of this cooking culture phenomenon in action – there he will undoubtedly see a celebrity chef, santoku knife in hand, slicing his way through a mound of vegetables and explaining how easy it is to achieve culinary perfection. This trend away from traditional (read French) chef’s knives begs the question: If santokus are used by celebrity chefs does that mean it they are right for you? The answer to this question is extremely important because it depends not only on the physical attributes of a cook but also on his lifestyle and social self.
Which kind of knife to buy is the one question that every serious cook must ask. Why? Because a cook’s knife (whether it be a traditional Western chef’s knife or a santoku) is the single most important purchase that a burgeoning chef will make. Every other knife and every other cooking product is just an accessory (except perhaps the skillet and the Dutch oven). The cook’s knife is the utilitarian workhorse of the kitchen. A cook will use his knife for more than eighty percent of his tasks – chopping, slicing, and dicing his way towards his finished product. In essence, the cook’s molds into the cook’s hand and transforms into a unique entity. Without a quality knife that he finds comfortable to use, the cooking experience greatly suffers. Thus, the importance of choosing the right kind of knife cannot be understated.
Physically Comparing the Santoku and the Chef’s Knife
A santoku is one to five inches shorter than the traditional chef’s knife, which typically measures between 8 -10” in length while the santoku is traditionally 5-7”. Its shorter length equates to a lighter knife and a reputation for nimble movements and swift chopping on the cutting board. The santoku’s blade is also straight and is level with the handle instead of dropping down as is so commonly found in traditional chef’s knives, which also happen have curved blades. Finally, santoku knives made of harder steel than their Western counterparts.
Now that a basic sketch of each knife’s physical specs has been made, you must decide if the lighter, shorter knife with the harder, flat blade (the santoku) or the longer, heavier knife with the softer, curved blade (the chef’s knife) is right for you. This is where your cooking history and your physical/personal characteristics come into play.
Your Cooking History
Is this the first time you are looking into a buying a cook’s knife? Or do you have a lot of experience with one of the types of knives, are in need of replacing it, and thinking about switching types? Or do you have a high quality santoku or chef’s knife in good condition and are thinking about purchasing the other kind to compliment the one you already own? These three questions lead to two different answers. A first time knife buyer or a cook that wants to compliment the knife he already owns by adding his knife’s “cousin” to his collection need not worry about his history and can skip ahead to the next section of this article. However, if you are looking to replace the knife you already own because it is either poorly constructed and delivers less than optimal performance or because its blade was accidently chipped, then you should reconsider switching types. A cook who has spent a lot of time cooking with a particular cook’s knife style becomes very accustomed to its performance attributes. A santoku displays a markedly different behavior on the cutting board than that displayed by the chef’s knife. Switching from one to other might frustrate a cook for a long while. Re-training your hand and cutting techniques is not impossible but will certainly take time. And there is always the slight possibility that you will not change your technique and the new knife’s qualities will be wasted. If you have the patience to reeducate your hand and to put with uncomfortable use for a short while, you should proceed with the article. If not, I suggest that you stick with type of knife you have. Nevertheless, if your hands are either large or small, or if you are either a vegetarian or eat a meat-based diet, than I suggest you also continue reading because you might be using the wrong kind of knife and should think about switching regardless of inconvenience.
The Size of Your Hand
As you can imagine the size of your hand is a very important factor. A cook with larger hands will find the santoku uncomfortably short and light if he is not used to using one and should consider switching if the need to replace his current knife ever arises. The reverse is also true – a chef’s knife will seem ungainly to a chef with slight hands.
Do You Rock? Or Do You Chop?
The curve of the blades found on traditional chef’s knives is prized because it enables the subtle rocking motion so often employed to mince ingredients. This smooth back and forth motion is quite difficult, if not impossible, to achieve with a santoku. If you like to rock the santoku might disappoint.
Conversely, the santoku excels at chopping which is the prepping technique of choice in Japanese kitchens. If you like to rock, in other words, the chef’s knife might be the one to disappoint. This is because the santoku is light, nimble and has a flat blade. While chopping vegetables, the beauty of the santoku in action makes a chef’s knife look like an elephant on ice.
Do You Finger Your Blade?
Many cooks (including your correspondent) like to hold their knife almost as if they are shaking a hand. They finger the top of the blade (which is thankfully also the non-lethal part). The santoku is perfect for this holding technique because its blade and handle meld into a seamless line. Fortunately, chef’s knives with a blade than is level with the handle can be found. If you, like me, like to finger the blade and decide on a chef’s knife, you simply need to search out those Western knives with the Eastern-styled handles.
Fries with That Burger? Or Salad with Those Fries?
Believe it or not, your diet lifestyle should play a significant factor in deciding between a santoku or a chef’s knife. It is probably more important than the size of your hands, your cooking history or even your cutting technique. This is because the Brinnel, Vickers, and Rocknell ratings (these are the various tests that determine the hardness of steel) are much higher the steel that santokus are constructed of. This harder blade leads to a sharper blade when compared to the softer chef’s knife. The sharper santoku is not always to the home cook’s advantage though. This is because it is more easily chipped and harder to maintain sharp than a chef’s knife (whose slightly softer blade is more forgiving when subjected to a sharpening stone). Therefore, a cook should avoid using santokus while cutting meat and should never use it to cut through bone.
The santoku was created in the culinary culture of Japan where the diet consists almost entirely of vegetables and fish. It is somewhat marginalized in the United States by the Western diet. Many people who purchase santokus (chef’s included) become disenchanted with them the moment their blade becomes chipped – which will happen if you use it cut through a lot of red meat and poultry. They were simply not designed for our caveman-like diet and our caveman treatment of food on the cutting board. American’s thrash through their ingredients while the Japanese tend to skate through it.
Yet, if you are vegetarian, there is simply no better cook’s knife option than the santoku. Its sharp blade will dance through your veggies for years and years. You will be amazed at its nimbleness – how the food you are chopping just dances off the blade, and the precision that its physical characteristics afford.
In Summary
The traditional chef’s knife is probably your best option if you have big hands, like to rock your blade on the board, and eat (and thus prepare) a lot of meat. Most importantly, if you are only going to have one knife and your prepare meat than the chef’s knife is for you. However, if you are a vegetarian, than the santoku is probably the right knife. The santoku outshines the chef’s knife with vegetables but is just not hardy enough to be the sole knife in a meat-eating cook’s cutlery repertoire.
Postscript
You still might be wondering why so many TV chefs use santokus. This is because the only “prepping” they actually is always vegetable related. They chop a lot of soft stuff. Believe me when I tell you that their off-camera serfs did not use santokus to get those steaks you are watching the chef sauté off of the bone. Also, even if some TV chef’s cut meat with their santokus, there are hundreds of free new knives waiting for use when the one being used is chipped.
Postscript Jr.
For your information, your correspondent uses a traditional chef’s knife. Why? Because I eat a diet that includes meat and right now I can only afford to have one premium knife. Although I finger my blade, I am also a rocker. In the end, I guess you can say that I have headed my own advice. Yet, I am planning on buying a santoku as soon as I can afford a really good one. Since vegetables take up the largest percentage of my diet, a santoku would really be handy and get a lot of good use in my kitchen.

Learning The Basics Of Hockey
To many, playing hockey is as much part of life as attending school. It will pay dividends then to become familiar with the basics of hockey, which of course means skating. Skating is to hockey as running is to football. Starting fast, changing pace and direction, bursting into top speed, and keeping good balance are common to both games. The blades on Hockey Skates and the cleats on football shoes provide gripping and braking surfaces which allow short, digging, breakaway steps and sure-footed, sudden stops.
But there is a great difference between the two sports, which is noticed particularly by the beginner. Running is natural - something you have done since you could first walk; skating, which requires a push-glide-push-glide succession of moves, is at first unnatural.
Once balance has been mastered, you can skate with much less effort than you can run. And you can skate at about twice your running speed, too. National Hockey League players have been clocked at 29 miles per hour. Compare this with the 15 miles per hour that a four-minute miler runs.
You and Your Skates
When you first learn to skate, the skates will not want to remain firmly under your feet. Your feet wobble, and your ankles cave in so that you stand on your ankles instead of on your feet. This "going over on the ankles" is caused by two things: lack of strength in your ankles and feet, and the condition of your Skate Boots.
Before each hockey season starts, check your skates before going on the ice. The fit of the skate boot is all-important for good, strong skating. If you wear a size eight street shoe, try on a size eight or eight and one-half skate boot, wearing wool socks for the fitting.
Hockey skates are a player's most important piece of equipment, and he should use the utmost care in selecting and caring for them.
You will probably need a new pair of skates each year for as long as your feet keep growing. It is a real mistake for both your feet and your skating to buy skates two sizes too large, in order to grow into them two years from now.
You are better off going to a skate exchange, or using a big brother's hand-me-down, to make sure of an exact fit. In buying used boots, be sure the leather tops provide good, stiff support and have not been stretched too much.
You should have your skate blades rockered. This is the term for rounding off the toes and heels of skate blades, which you can have done when getting your skates sharpened. Actually, if you hold your skates up to the light with edge meeting edge, only about one inch of the blades should contact each other. This shaping of the blades is most important for quick weight shifts and maintenance of speed when making tight turns.
You soon will lose the sharp edges of your blades if you walk carelessly on concrete or asphalt. And it takes just one tiny burr, or nick, to send you into one swan dive after another. To protect your blades' sharp edges, use skate guards to get you from the dressing room to the ice, if rubber mats are not provided.
Enjoy this wonderful sport safely with the right equipment and the right attitude. Have fun!

Buy the Right Skate Blades for Your Ice Skates
On the ice sliding from one end to the other, Ice skating is sometimes viewed as an art and those that participate in ice skating are greatly admired. The actual activity of ice skating has a long history and has been around for a number of centuries; possibly even before the discovery of metal blades, it is believed that animal bones and wood were used.
Today ice skates are boots made and attached to metal blades and are sometimes seen an a mastered art that looks easy to learn but can prove otherwise difficult. Because skate blades are used in various ice sports and activities, it is essential to understand the different types, their uses and designs. There are two main ways or styles of ice skating today, they are figure skating and hockey skating. Figure skating is used for ice skating activities such dance, freestyle skating aerobics and as the name suggests, figure skating. Where a skater creates figures when moving across the ice, a good example of this would be creating a plain 0 in ice. Hockey skating is part of the sport of hockey, there is no art to this, only balance and control of one's body and being able to move quickly on the ice field of play. Each one of the two types of ice skating uses a different kind of skating blade that is designed specifically for that type of skating.
- The figure skates - blades are longer styled in the shape of a "rocker" and give life to the name the blade carries that of a rocker. The blades are designed for a slow halt and have a small tail at the back which is used to enable a skater to come to a halt. The rocker design is effective for a skater on the ice as it gives them more control over their movements as they slice their way across the ice.
- The hockey skate blades by comparison are very different. Instead of the rocker design, they are designed to build momentum and enable skaters to easily move across the ice and make sudden stops. Thus the hockey skate blades are designed narrower and less curved than figure skates.
Skate blades are manufactured using carbon steel and are heat hardened to make them stronger and last more on the ice. If the skates are not hardened, they can easily wear with time. Because of carbon's reaction to water, it is essential to ensure that proper care is given to maintain ice skates. Areas such as a person's body weight, skill level on the ice, personal discipline and ice temperatures contribute to the wear and length that ice skates last. If there is any sign of wear on the blades it affects the way one moves and skates on the ice.
If a person is to own and keep a pair of ice skates, one must show the passion that is so clearly exemplified on the ice by dancers and hockey players

That's Hockey $6.74 When Etienne takes his cousin out to play street hockey for the first time, he has a lot of explaining to do. Street hockey is nothing like ice hockey. Everyone has to wear a No. 9 Canadiens hockey sweater, but beyond that, the game has more to do with a fun day in the snow than with winning or losing. Etienne''s cousin comes away with a talisman and a story worth passing on. David Bouchard grew up on the prairies, where he lived and breathed street hockey. Every detail of That''s Hockey, from Mop and Tooth to the mugs of hot chocolate, is drawn from experience. In That''s Hockey, David Bouchard and illustrator Dean Griffiths team up for the second time. Dean brings the same lively playfulness to street hockey here that he brought to a Harley-riding tooth fairy in David Bouchard''s Fairy. |

Ice Fishing In Lac Du Bonnet - Great Fun For All Age Groups
as no surprise that more and more people are pitching little know spots for this specialized holiday activity and here’s where Ice fishing in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, situated nearly 111 kilometers, or 70 miles north-east from the capital city of Winnipeg, offers.
Lac Du Bonnet gets its quaint name from the shape of the lake (yes, a bonnet-form) that has hosted many national and state fishing tournaments during winters and summers with ice fishing being an age-old tradition for Canadians and Americans with a special love for ice fishing at Lac Du Bonnet. In fact, the reputation of this ice fishing lake is so widely known that even international anglers from all over the world collect here to avail its abundant fishing fun and activities, while booking comfortable and tourist friendly fishing lodges that also offer affordable boarding facilities. There are motels, smaller B&B kind of outfits also at Lac Du Bonnet, but for the winter season, hoteliers prepare extra rooms beyond the needs of its small local group of committed anglers!
The season for Ice fishing in Lac du Bonnet and its nearby waterways usually starts in November; this is the time the ice thickens to nearly 4 inches and there’s no less than 65 miles of water-ways for avid fisherman to scout the right spot for casting a line with an eye to reeling in Sager, Pike, Goldeneye and Mackerel. The waters are ideal for ice fishing in Lac Du Bonnet as the temperatures keep the flesh of the fish firm as compared to the slight murky taste that lingers on in the same varieties fished in the shallow, warm waters in other parts of the region.
Around the middle of March, a one-day Ice fishing Tournament is organized by the local businessman here at Lac du Bonnet; it is divided into several categories and prizes include a mystery length award and mystery time episode besides 50 assorted prizes that further boost the occasion’s fun factor. All in all, a great time for the friends and family you could consider taking on when deciding this year’s winter holiday.
More news on the tournament includes knowing the basics of ice fishing at Lac Duc Bonnet, which involves the catch and release contest, tips on handling the fish to reduce any trauma and the specified boundaries for anglers fishing in the lake and singling a tourney judge upon catching a fish. The whole procedure involves awaiting the judge’s arrival at the fishing hole, pulling the catch out of the water, measuring, recording and freeing the fish into the lake and then entering the mystery time and length to qualify for different divisions of the tournament.
An environment-friendly competition, this tournament for ice fishing held during winters in Lac du Bonnet ensures fun all round for everyone and is unique in itself

How can I take good care of my ice skates?
I've had the same pair of ice skates since the 10th grade. I only get to go skating about 5 times during the winter months here, so I am not an avid skater at all, but I sure do love it when I do go!
I went skating earlier tonight and I have noticed that my blades have started getting rusty in little patches. I had the rink attendant sharpen my blades, and hoped that the rust would come off like that, but it didn't.
Any tips for the upkeep of my old skates? How should I take care of the rust? How often do I need to have the blades sharpened?
Any other tips on how to keep these skates for a while?
Thanks in advance!
its important when ever you get off the ice to dry both the blade and boot thoroughly to make sure you get all the execes water of. for the rust i dont know what to do but maybe get new blades ( the rust is fine) also remeber lay your skates out when you get home so they can air dry.this technique is also a good way for your skates not stink. also try getting some soakers

CCM Vector V08 Ice Skates?
I can get some CCM Vector V08 skates for about $250 which is about the most i am willing to spend. I am really starting to lean towards buying them, the only turn off is, i noticed they don't really have any customizable fit. I was going to get some mission 120 AGs which have the thermo-formable crap, but i have a wide foot and i keep hearing about how narrow they are. I just need someone to ease my worry about the CCMs/tell me if they are worth buying or give me a better alternative. Thanks.
the new vector line from CCM is alot more narrow then past lines. the mission skates probably have the most narrow fit out of them all however. i would look into nike flexlites, they fit exactly like the old quest lines. another option is the one55's. im currently skating the one75s and i have an extremely wide foot. it just fits me in the width so you shoul be fine. if you need to get a very wide skate, go extra wide in graf skates. it'll fit almost anyone with a wide foot.

Ice Skating: Practice Clothes Make A Difference
Ice skating competitions can be nerve-racking experiences. They combine so many factors, from precision to style, and your personal statement shows in everything right down to the costume you wear when you skate out onto the ice. You can easily spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars every year on your skating costumes because they are so labor-intensive to make and they must be fitted so precisely to give the right lines to your body.
A mistake that many young skaters make, however, is not bothering to invest in the proper ice skating practice clothes. Early on they may purchase a few good quality pieces if they are on a junior team or are just beginning their lessons and there is a "dress code" that they must adhere to; but as time goes on they begin to throw on "just any old thing," when they are practicing on their own time. This is a mistake for a number of reasons, and each of them can and will affect their performance in the ring.
• You should always wear form-fitting ice skating clothing when you are practicing because your coach can't really see your form or observe your body alignment under baggy clothing. That sweat suit that's fine for basketball won't cut it on the ice - the curve of the arm, the way your buttocks are tucked, everything is crucial and the only way someone observing you can correct you is to really see your body.
• Even when nobody is observing you, it's easier to "feel" your own body's alignment when you aren't hindered by layers of bulk. Not only is it cumbersome to move with bulky clothing twisting around your joints, it's dangerous. If you become tangled in your clothing while ice skating you can take a serious spill, taking you out of any competitions for quite a while.
• Form-fitting doesn't mean tight or constricting. Forget those old cast-offs from someone else that are just a wee bit too small. If you can't move freely in them and they don't have enough give for you to move combined with enough stretch to spring back, they aren't meant for ice skating. Be sure to check the labels - breathable materials like cotton or Polartec fleece are great at wicking away moisture, but between 5% and 10% Spandex or Lycra are necessary for the stretch and forgiveness needed.
• Dressing appropriately for practice will help you maintain the right attitude. It's a fact - if you dress sloppy, you act sloppy. Neat, attractive practice clothes help you perform better simply because you feel more professional and polished. It's exactly why so many coaches have practice dress codes (just like offices have dress codes for their professionals).
The best part of all this is that ice skating practice clothes these days are attractive, comfortable and have all the features to optimize your performance. Boot-cut Skating Pants with side stripes to elongate the legs, stretch camis for layering and shrugs in fashionable colors with beadwork so pretty they can go from the ice to a night out are all available for reasonable prices. Practice skirts in fun fabrics like zippy flowered patterns and bold polka-dots make a statement and give you the chance to get the feel of wearing a dress on the ice without wearing a full-on costume every day. So if you're really serious about your ice skating - make the investment to dress the part every day.

*****Figure skates (Ice skates)*****?
I love ice skating and figure skating and want my own skates. I don't have much money and want really cheap ones. I know you get better quality ones if you pay more but tbh i don't really care about the quality. I was looking for a good website with cheap figure skates and cheap p&p (postage and packaging) as well. Does anyone know any good websites or shops in the uk (thats where I live) ?
A good place for cheap, new ice skates is eBay - you can get the same skates that pro shops sell but for less money. This page is new skates for under £30.00 plus postage:

These skates are £38

If you don't mind paying a bit more, you could get Riedell yellow ribbons. I know that you don't care about quality, but these will probably last you longer than the others and be easier to skate in because Riedell is supposedly a good brand of skate:

They cost a lot less on the second page, but I don't know what the postage is...
Finally, you could get recreational skates for less money than figure skates:

Italy for Seniors Travel
It's no surprise that Italy is one of the world's top tourist destinations, with amazing sights like ancient cities, classic works of art, charming villages, majestic natural scenery and much more spread all over the country. It's also a great place for seniors travel in particular, with a large range of great historical tours, wine tastings, education and language packages and cruises tailored to overseas visitors on offer.
Senior citizens enjoy a respected status in Italy. Culturally, they are considered not old, but wise and experienced having contributed long and well to society. This great respect for seniors translates to all sorts of benefits like discounts at restaurants and all sorts of local places, so be sure to ask wherever you are. However, in terms of overall discounts to well known attractions, we have heard in some instances that seniors travel discounts do not get offered to non-EU citizens, but be sure to ask.
Avoid the queues. As anyone who's been to Rome or Florence in summertime can tell you, seeing Europe's top artistic sights is no mean feat during high season. Visitors from all over the world queue around the block, and sometimes the block after that, to see the many masterpieces on display. We are talking HOURS. If you want to see these great works without standing the sun all day, come to Italy between mid-March and May or in September and October, when the crowds are considerably smaller. Another great way to avoid a long wait at the Vatican Museum in particular is to come on the last Sunday of every month, when admission is free and the line moves considerably faster! Alternatively pre-book your entry tickets. This is a great way to avoid the terrible hassle and something I personally do before all my trips.
Prepare for the heat. Italy is one of the hottest parts of Europe in high summer - in the capital, for example, the temperatures frequently exceed 30C during July and August. For the most comfortable trip possible come between April and June or in September and October, when temperatures will range from 18-25C. The ottobrate, or "beautiful October days", are especially well known as a great time to be in Rome. If you do come during the high season, bring plenty of water and sunscreen and wear a hat during the midday sun. It's easy to get dehydrated when there are so many fascinating sites to visit! I have also found that some of the shopping centres are not air-conditioned, you find this in France too. So at times in high heat, an escape to the shops is not an option.
Take your time. Even without the scorching sun and thronging crowds of summer, seeing all the sights of Italy can be a demanding task for anyone. In fact, most people find themselves walked out after only visiting a couple of the main historical sites in Rome such as the Roman Forum or the Coliseum. Many of the country's coastal and rural tourist sites, moreover, are difficult or inaccessible to anyone with mobility issues. The best way to get around this problem is to take it easy, prioritize which sites you're most interested in and don't try to cram in too many activities in one day. If you truly are interested in visiting the famous historical sites and museums, my advice is to allow plenty of time to do this and try not to do too much in a day.
Stand for your coffee. It is a whole lot more expensive if you take a table at a cafe for your coffee break and panini. You will see the locals standing at the coffee bar because it is cheaper. However, I personally see taking a table at a local haunt as part of the tourist attraction - watch the locals and recover your feet. But if you are on a budget, stand for your coffee.
Savour the flavor. Of course, another of Italy's top attractions is its great food. The home of pasta, ice cream and pizza has a deservedly good reputation for its delicious traditional fare - make it your business to try all three! The Trastavere food district in Rome is a good place to start. You will find great deals everywhere for food, particularly if you are willing to explore the back streets a little and get off the tourist path. A great cost saving tip is to take a set menu, generally offered at lunch time. They include a range of courses and almost certainly come with a glass of wine. So, eat your main meal during the day at lunch time like the Italians. You can walk it off in the afternoon. For the true lovers of Italian food, there are plenty of cooking courses to do. You can choose from half day courses to 2 week immersion experiences.
Enjoy wine country. For wine lovers the world over, Italy is a feast for the taste buds. Famous varietals like Chianti, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Pinot Grigio all come from here, plus dozens more you can come to know and love during your stay. Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to vineyard tours, which are dotted all around the country. If you are not staying in one of the wine regions, again, you can take day trips from some of the major destinations like Florence to Chianti. There are plenty of options from Rome, Milan and Naples too.

Your Exclusive Guide to Business Know How
You may be in Mail Order, Direct Mail, or you may be a local merchant with 150 employees; whichever, however or whatever - you've got to know how to keep your business alive during economic recessions. Anytime the cash flow in a business, large or small, starts to tighten up, the money management of that business has to be run as a "tight ship."
Some of the things you can and should do include protecting yourself from expenditures made on sudden impulse. We've all bought merchandise or services we really didn't need simply because we were in the mood, or perhaps in response to the flamboyancy of the advertising or the persuasiveness of the salesperson. Then we sort of "wake up" a couple of days later and find that we've committed hundreds of dollars of business funds for an item or service that's not essential to the success of our own business, when really pressing items had been waiting for those dollars.
If you are incorporated, you can eliminate these "impulse purchases chases" by including in your by-laws a clause that states: "All purchasing decisions over (a certain amount) are contingent upon approval by the board of directors." This will force you to consider any "impulse purchases" of considerable cost, and may even be a reminder in the case of smaller purchases.
If your business is a partnership, you can state, when faced with a buying decision, that all purchases are contingent upon the approval of a third party. In reality, the third party can be your partner, one of your department heads, or even one of your suppliers.
If your business is a sole proprietorship, you don't have much to worry about really, because as an individual you have three days to think about your purchase, and then to nullify that purchase if you think you don't really need it or can't afford it.
While you may think you cannot afford it, be sure that you don't "short-change" your self on professional services. This would apply especially during a time of emergency. Anytime you commit yourself and move ahead without completely investigating all the angles, and preparing yourself for all the contingencies that may arise, you're skating on thin ice. Regardless of the costs involved, it always pays off in the long run to seek out the advice of experienced professionals before embarking on a plan that could ruin you.
As an example, an experienced business consultant can fill you in on the 1244 stock advantages. Getting eligibility for the 1244 stock category is a very simple process, but one with tremendous benefits to your business.
The 1244 status encourages investors to put equity capital into your business because in the event of a loss, amounts up to the entire sum of the investment can be written off in the current year. Without the "1244" classification, any losses would have to be spread over several years, and this, of course, would greatly lessen the attractiveness of your company's stock. Any business owner who has not filed the 1244 corporation has in effect cut himself off from 90 percent of his prospective investors.

Question about buying ice skates.?
I'm thinking about buying myself a pair of ice skates. I don't figure skate or anything like that, just skate for fun.
For a person like me, would non-leather ice skates be okay? Do they have any advantages over leather skates for simply recreational skaters? Any disadvantages?
I'm also considering buying a used pair. What questions should I ask and what should I watch out for? I probably won't be using these skates more than once a week (if that).
Congrats for wanting to buy ice skates! haha
umm leather skates are prolly going to be more comfortable but thats up to you. If your going to buy a used pair then maybe go to a thrift store -- they always seem to have some.. and look for the best looking ones.. like if the leather isn't all broken and if the blades look clean and not rusted etc. Also consider getting blade covers cuz they help the life of your blades. You might want to ask how much you are going to skate because they have cheap pairs ranging from $20 - $30 at dicks sporting goods -- i saw them like 3 weeks ago and they are pretty decent for the every so often skater.
hope this helped! =]
