beginning figure skating. question?
i want to start figure skating lessons soon. but no matter what i can only go once a week.
so once i get to freestyle 1 i want to be able to practice as much as i want.
so will getting inline skates (not rollerblades or anything. like pic skates, or snow whites) help? or will they mess up my skating?
damn it. i said INLINE SKATES. NOT ROLLER SKATES
It will be different but it will help you somewhat.

Is Inline skating Rollerblading good for Ice Hockey?
I haven't Ice Skated in years, but recently got bitten by the Hockey bug again. I can't get skates yet, or get into Fall league. But I hope to play by the late Winter sessions once I can get equipment.
Anyways, I do have rollerblades for hockey, will this help my legs/ankles get stronger, and be a good workout for Ice Skating training? It's basically using the same muscles to push, and the balance is pretty similar? Or am I wrong? I've seen the Sedin twins train very intensely with inline skating in the off season.
I'm a very solid skater on roller blades, and was great on ice as a younger kid. Will I still fall on my face when I lace up Ice Skates for the first time if I train on blades good, and long? Will my ankles be a bending?
yes. It is very good to train with rollerblades. You will have no worries to any of those questions if you use rollerblades...The balance situation is different though. but its very good for your ice hockey to train on rollerblades...
-Yes rollerblades help for your legs and ankles.
-The balance is similar but i suggest you go to an open skate or two before your practice so your not too rusty...there is a difference some people can handle and adjust quickly to the change, some cant.
-&many hockey players grew up on rollerblades when it was too warm to play hockey...look where they are now.
-If you rollerblade and go on actual ice everyonce in a while you shouldnt worry about falling on your face...youll be finne.
-and no. your ankles shouldnt be bending at all...rollerblades will certainly help prevent that

Is anyone SICK of the massive food companys trying to go all healthy??
Like bloody Kelloggs trying to convince mothers that Frosties, a cereal where each piece is caked in sugar, is healthy because a cartoon tiger rides around on a pair of rollerblades....and they buy it! and every food is now 'wholegrain' or 'enriched with omega 3' or 'no added colourings'.....no added FUN more like....what happened to bright coloured food, food pumped full of crap so much it glowed...i know it was unhealthy but the fact is im still alive, so it couldnt have been that bad!
But although they keep Frosties, they get rid of all the good cereals!! what happened to Corn Pops?? or Lucky Charms?? America still has them....i took a box home when i went there....i put it in my hand luggage....the guy who had to search my bag gave me a funny look....he obviously doesnt know the only way to get them in the uk is by paying 7 QUID A BOX AT SELFRIDGES!!! (for any american readers thats 13 dollars!) its mad...
No it doesn't bother me at all. They make to food that sells the best. That is a way to make a profit. So I don't loose any sleep over it.

Skaters- are these good inline skates?
My brother wants a pair of rollerblades for xmas, are these good quality and appropriate for someone in their 20s?
http://www.skateaggressive.com/adult-aggressive-skates/c1000004374/rollerblade-dt5-aggressive-skates-2009-p146999.html
I haven't skated in agressive skates for years (used them for goalie in roller hockey) but Rollerblade is one of the better inline companies. If you need further insight you might want to consult with www.inlinesports.com as they sell a pretty good amount
of aggressive skating stuff, www.inlinewarehouse.com is pretty good as well.

Quit smoking tips for you
Every packet of cigarette is inscribed with the message "smoking is injurious to health". Even after all these warnings people continue to smoke.
In this article, we all give some tips to stay away from smoking.
Mark a date few weeks before you stop smoking. This method will give you enough time to prepare yourself mentally for upcoming changes. However, it will also permit you to start some medical treatment.
In this method, you need to implement your thought of giving up smoking. The day you decide to quit smoking- throw away your cigarette packets into dustbin. This will block your easy access for cigarettes. It will also leave a great psychological impact.
Avoid visiting the place and locations that will provoke you to light cigarettes. Even avoid the habits with which normally you smoked. For example, some people have a habit of smoking cigarette with morning tea or coffee. So replace your habit of drinking tea or coffee with herbal teas. Stay away from visiting night pubs or clubs.
Keep some smoking aids with your doctors' consultation. Smoking aids such as nicotine patches or gums helps in your decision to quit smoking.
Save the money that you used to spend on purchasing cigarettes. Keep a record of daily expense that will help you to verify your unnecessary expenses. Curb down this expense and you may be able to purchase something useful for you.
Adapt yourself to physical activities. Include lot of sports in your daily lifestyle. Start going for long walks or walk down to grocery store. Purchase a cycle or bike for yourself, travel to nearby place with cycle instead of traveling with car. Weekly opt for swimming or rollerblade. You can pick any physical activity that might interest you. Introducing yourself to sports not only improves your physic, but also helps in detoxification. It also reduces your immense craving for cigarettes.
Alter your eating habit. Include ample of fresh green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Maintain your body weight and stay away from obesity.
Ask help from your family and friends. They will definitely help you to stay away from your habit.
The best way to boost your plan is- reward yourself. The day you successfully stay away from cigarettes- reward yourself with two scoops of ice creams or enjoy some chocolate brownies with ice cream. After one week successful achievement – reward something big.
The last tip to quit smoking is to stay patient and calm. Believe in yourself and have confidence. Stick to your plans and schedules. Take help of some medicated drugs, which will keep you away from withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and extreme weakness. Supply your body with ample of nutrients that will keep you energetic.

Rollerblading in UK - London?
Hey, I'm going in UK - London on wednesday for three months - babysitting.
I was thinking if it is a good idea to bring rollerblades with me since it's a nice way of transport - do they allow you to shop with rollerblades (here it's allowed)????
Rollerblades can be used on the pavement as long as you take care and give way to pedestrians. Using them inside shops however is not usually accepted and you maybe asked to take them off. Its at the shops discretion.
To be honest, with so much traffic in London, rollerblades may not be the safest form of transport. Why don't you just do what everyone else does and buy a monthly Travelcard, giving you unlimited travel on the Tube, DLR, Buses, Trams and Overground for the entire month. See the link for information and prices.

Old Curiosity Shop, The (2007)(DVD) $18.95 Based on Dickens classic novel The Old Curiosity Shop tells the tale of Little Nell Trent (Sophie Vavasseur) who lives with her doting grandfather (Jacobi) in his London shop. It is a magical place, filled from wall to wall with dust-laden treasures, known as The Old Curiosity Shop. Grandfather keeps his nocturnal gambling activities a secret, borrowing heavily from evil, profiteering loan shark Daniel Quilp (Jones). When he gambles away what little money they possess, Quilp seizes the opportunity to take possession of their beloved shop. It seems Nell and Grandfather are left with only one option - to escape. The pair fall in with a number of colourful characters, some villainous and some affectionate, on the run from Quilp and his band of misguided money seekers, including Nells own wastrel brother Freddie (Dick) and his gullible friend Dick Swiveller (Breton). |

First Date Tips and Conversation Starters
One of the things that many singles have difficulty with is talking with a new person or going out on a first date. Whether it is chatting with someone that you met online or going on a blind date, these experiences can sometimes be uncomfortable and stressful. Here are some tips on first date ideas, as well as starting a conversation up and keeping it going.
First Date Ideas
For most people, the goal of a first date is to meet a person and to figure out if you are either interested or compatible with that person. While a first date doesn't have to be a perfect 10 to know that there can be something in the future with this person, most people just want it to go positively.
One of the best places to go for a first date is to a coffee shop. Coffee shops are great, because you can sit and talk to one another. You won't get to know each other sitting in a darkened movie theater staring at a screen for two hours. Coffee shops are usually made for conversation; they are affordable for singles on a budget and located in convenient locations. Plus you can meet during the evening or even schedule a lunch date.
If you find that you are not that sociable or pretty quiet when you date, you might want to set up a date where you both do an activity. First dates such as bowling, rollerblading or ice skating are a great way to meet someone new and if the conversation slows down, you can focus on your activity. You can take this idea one step further and instead of doing an athletic based activity, you can choose a cultural activity, such as an exhibition, visiting a museum or enjoying a live musical performance.
Ultimately, your goal is to figure out if you enjoy this person's company, so choose dates that fit your style and personality, while also giving you an opportunity to get to know someone new.
Conversation Starters
Let's face it; it can be very difficult to start a conversation with someone that you don't know at all or very well. While there are people that are experts and can make friends with anyone, most people usually find themselves tongue tied or speechless at certain moments. One of the ways to avoid this obstacle is to remember common and easy to use conversation starters.
First off, conversations starters are not closed ended sentences that require no input from the other person; they are open ended questions or statements that invite the other person to share their thoughts. You don't have to ask very smart questions, you can just engage in small comfortable chit chat that gets you both talking, eventually, this small chit chat will lead to a more meaningful and interesting conversation. Some of the most common conversation starts are; how was your weekend? Have you been to a specific place before (the restaurant or coffee shop that you are at)? What area are you from originally? W school or college did you attend? You can also talk about movies, music, favorite television shows, etc. The goal is to relax and feel comfortable conversing with the other person, once relaxed and comfortable, the conversation will usually flow.

Is 7 Minute Muscle Scam?
I don't know who coined this phrase but it's something that has had a massive impact on my physical, intellectual and spiritual life.

Most types of yoga stretching exercises are of the low impact type that help flexibility and strength and at the same time, try to assist the mind unlock the mysteries of the ego and the mysteries of nature. Usually speaking, yoga workout do not burn as many calories; as they were never intended to. On the other hand, some types of yoga, such as power yoga and Ashtanga are aerobic workouts by themselves and can help just one get rid of excess weight provided just one does not consume too numerous calories.
Which brings us to our next point, any one of us will get rid of excess weight if we burn extra calories than we consume. It's just good science. Knowing that yoga could be quite strenuous at times, we can most surely say that yoga for excess weight loss is no myth, even if there could be improved or extra efficient methods for excess weight loss out there (running, swimming, cross-country skiing, rollerblading, etc).

This is especially if we consider that following traditional yoga precepts regarding diet plan. The diet plan of a yogi, following ancient rules and standards, is vegetarian, with meat, fish and eggs becoming completely off the menu. The resultant diet plan is quite low in calories in contrast to most western diets.
Just think about it for a minute. You don't even require to do yoga work outs in order to make the notion of yoga for excess weight loss work for you. The ideas behind yoga for excess weight loss becoming ineffective stem from the fact that the workout which are associated with yoga burn comparatively few calories to other work outs.
On the other hand, when combined with the dietary system that accompanied those work outs for thousands of years, it becomes apparent that yoga for excess weight loss is no myth and is fairly effective. When combined with other forms of workout like aerobics and strength training, the yoga aspect will generally help keep joints from straining during the other forms of workout, helping just one do weigh loss workouts correctly and safely. All things considered, following yoga principles will surely help just one to get rid of excess weight.

Fitness in Your Fifties - Taking it Outdoors
The summer is rapidly coming to a close, but there are still many weeks of beautiful weather…perfect for exercising outdoors. Living in the southeast has its advantages! It’s often still hot enough in the afternoon that it’s probably preferable to engage in these activities early in the morning or in the evening, after 6pm, when it’s a little cooler. The great part of being active outdoors is that the possibilities are endless. You can walk or run…you can ride a bike…you can rollerblade, and the outdoor pools are still open if you enjoy swimming. How about a little volleyball or softball or even soccer? Live in a place that has great trails? Go hiking with friends…give rock climbing a try…or take a rafting trip. All of these are wonderful ways to enjoy the great outdoors, while giving your body a workout.
You also need to consider some other activities that you usually call “chores,” which in reality are a great way to be active and productive at the same time. Take some time to weed your garden. How about planting some new flowers that will bloom in the fall? Your grass is still growing…30-40 minutes of mowing your lawn will burn some calories (unless you are using a riding mower). Throw open that garage door and give it a good cleaning. Many suburbanites use their garages as a storage unit, rather than a place to park their car. Items in it tend to pile up, so take some time to go through boxes and dispose of unwanted items. Wash the car…or cars. Make it even more physical by giving it a good waxing after it’s dried. If you own a dog, take it for a long walk (20+ minutes) every day. Every one of these are great ways to move your body, work your muscles, increase your heart rate as well as provide your body with vitamin D (which comes from exposure to the sunlight). It doesn’t always have to be “formal” exercise to count.
I urge you to take advantage of the extended daylight…the moderate temperatures and the chance to enjoy the outdoors. You might be tempted to take your iPod or MP3 player with you on these outings. My advice is to skip it and just enjoy the sounds of your surroundings. If any streets are involved, you need to be listening for cars, which wearing headsets might make difficult. Try saving your music for those indoor workouts on the treadmill or elliptical. I always think its fun to enjoy your surroundings on a walk or bike ride. Sometimes you might notice something that you’ve never seen before, which can surprise and delight you.
It’s important to intentionally plan these activities. Be sure that you do something 3-5 times per week. Put them on your calendar as a reminder. Whenever possible, enlist a friend to go with you. The camaraderie will provide you with stimulating conversation and make you more accountable. It will make the time go faster too. On the flip side…don’t put this off if you don’t have anyone who can join you. Instead, challenge yourself and make the commitment to do it! Marking it off on your kitchen calendar will make your accomplishment more visible.
If you still have school age children, don’t let the back to school rush cause you to give up exercise (with the promise to return to it in October). If your child plays a fall sport, go to the games and walk around the field during the warm-ups. See how many circuits you can complete before the game starts. Invite your teenager to join you for your walks or bike rides. Maybe even make an afternoon of yard work a parent/teen activity. Doing things together will encourage conversation and provide some valuable family time. It will also show your child that you care enough about yourself that you choose to be active!

Is it hard to make the transition between Hockey Skates and powerslides?
I have been skating with inline rollerblades for 9 years. The ones I'm used to are the regular boot that comes up on your leg about 5 inches. The wheels are 80mm with an 85a softtness. I'm about to buy some powerslides with lowcut boots and 110mm wheels, same softness.
I've already taught myself how to double push on turns and going forward with these regular inlines, so do you think it'll be hard to start using powerslides?
Hardness of the wheels will be unimportant.
Powerslide is just one of many makers of inline racing skates. The big difference (assuming that you have reasonable skill and will be able to handle the large wheels) will be the lack of support by the racing boots.
I know people who have loosened all the cuff fastening buckles and laces to prepare for racing boots. Also know people who found that they could only skate for 15 - 30 minutes at first on the racing boots instead of hours on other skates. That went away as their ankle muscles became stronger and able to support them better.
A trick to try is to put your 80mm wheels on the frames first to get your ankles used to the short boot without the additional leverage of the 110mm wheels.
From what I have been hearing from my racing friends, 110mm may be too big for some people.

Glove
A glove (Middle English from Old English glof) is a type of garment (and more specifically a fashion accessory) which covers the hand of a human. Gloves have separate sheaths or openings for each finger and the thumb; if there is an opening but no covering sheath for each finger they are called "fingerless gloves". Fingerless gloves with one large opening rather than individual openings for each finger are sometimes called gauntlets. Gloves which cover the entire hand but do not have separate finger openings or sheaths are called mittens. Mittens are almost always warmer than gloves made of the same material because fingers maintain their warmth better when they are in contact with each other. As well, the reduced surface area means that there is less heat loss.
cross earring
There is also a hybrid of glove and mitten which contains open-ended sheaths for the four fingers (as in a fingerless glove, but not the thumb) and also an additional compartment encapsulating the four fingers as a mitten would. This compartment can be lifted off the fingers and folded back to allow the individual fingers ease of movement and access while the hand remains covered. The usual design is for the mitten cavity to be stitched onto the back of the fingerless glove only, allowing it to be flipped over (normally held back by Velcro or a button) to transform the garment from a mitten to a glove. Gloves can serve to protect and comfort the hands of the wearer against cold or heat, physical damage by friction, abrasion or chemicals, and disease; or in turn to provide a guard for what a bare hand should not touch. Latex, nitrile rubber or vinyl disposable gloves are often worn by health care professionals as hygiene and contamination protection measures. Police officers often wear them to work in crime scenes to prevent destroying evidence in the scene. Many criminals also wear these gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints, which makes the crime investigation more difficult. Fingerless gloves are useful for bikers and where dexterity is required that gloves would restrict. These gloves are not particularly used in cold weather, as the exposed finger numbs. Cigarette smokers and church organists often use fingerless gloves. Some gloves include a gauntlet that extends partway up the arm. Cycling gloves for road racing or touring are usually fingerless. Gloves have been made of many materials including cloth, knitted or felted wool, leather, rubber, latex, neoprene, and metal (as in mail). Modern gloves made of kevlar protect the wearer from cuts. Gloves and gauntlets are also integral components of pressure suits and spacesuits such as the Apollo/Skylab A7L which went to the moon. Spacesuit gloves must combine extreme toughness and environmental protection with a degree of sensitivity and flexibility if the astronaut is to do any manual work. Today gloves are made around the world. Most expensive women's fashion gloves are still made in France, with some made in Canada. For cheaper male gloves New York State, especially Gloversville, New York is still a world centre of glove manufacturing. More and more glove manufacturing is being done in East Asia, however. Gloves appear to be of great antiquity. According to some translations of Homer's The Odyssey, La?rtes is described as wearing gloves while walking in his garden so as to avoid the brambles.[1] (Other translations, however, insist that Laertes pulled his long sleeves over his hands.) Herodotus, in The History of Herodotus (440 BC), tells how Leotychides was incriminated by a glove (gauntlet) full of silver that he received as a bribe.[2] Among the Romans also there are occasional references to the use of gloves. According to Pliny the Younger (ca. 100), his uncle's shorthand writer wore gloves during the winter so as not to impede the elder Pliny's work.[3] During the 13th century, gloves began to be worn by ladies as a fashion ornament.[1] They were made of linen and silk, and sometimes reached to the elbow.[1] Such worldly accoutrements were not for holy women, according to the early thirteenth-century Ancrene Wisse, written for their guidance.[4] Sumptuary laws were promulgated to restrain this vanity: against samite gloves in Bologna, 1294, against perfumed gloves in Rome, 1560. A Paris corporation or guild of glovers (gantiers) existed from the thirteenth century. They made them in skin or in fur. It was not until the 16th century that they reached their greatest elaboration, however, when Queen Elizabeth I set the fashion for wearing them richly embroidered and jeweled, and for putting them on and taking them off during audiences, to draw attention to her beautiful hands.[7] In Paris, the gantiers became gantiers parfumeurs, for the scented oils, musk, ambergris and civet, that perfumed leather gloves, but their trade, which was an introduction at the court of Catherine de' Medici,[8] was not specifically recognised until 1656, in a royal brevet. Makers of knitted gloves, which did not retain perfume and had less social cachet, were organised in a separate guild, of bonnetiers[9] who might knit silk as well as wool. Such workers were already organised in the fourteenth century. Knitted gloves were a refined handiwork that required five years of apprenticeship; defective work was subject to confiscation and burning. Embroidered and jeweled gloves also formed part of the insignia of emperors and kings. Thus Matthew of Paris, in recording the burial of Henry II of England in 1189, mentions that he was buried in his coronation robes with a golden crown on his head and gloves on his hands.[1] Gloves were also found on the hands of King John when his tomb was opened in 1797 and on those of King Edward I when his tomb was opened in 1774.[1] Pontifical gloves are liturgical ornaments used primarily by the pope, the cardinals, and bishops.[1] They may be worn only at the celebration of mass.[1] The liturgical use of gloves has not been traced beyond the beginning of the 10th century, and their introduction may have been due to a simple desire to keep the hands clean for the holy mysteries, but others suggest that they were adopted as part of the increasing pomp with which the Carolingian bishops were surrounding themselves.[1] From the Frankish kingdom the custom spread to Rome, where liturgical gloves are first heard of in the earlier half of the 11th century.[1] Latex gloves, ubiquitous in surgery and forensics, were developed by the Australian Ansell company. It is also widely believed that vanilla essence can preserve gardening gloves during winter (and spring) months. The fabrics include: rubber, cotton, wool and plastic. Fingerless gloves (or glovelettes) are garments worn on the hands which resemble regular gloves in most ways, except that the finger columns are half-length and opened, allowing the tops of the wearer's fingers to emerge through. Fingerless gloves are often padded in the palm area, to provide protection to the hand, and the exposed fingers do not interfere with sensation or gripping. In contrast to traditional gloves, often worn for warmth, fingerless gloves will often have a ventilated back to allow the hands to cool; this is commonly seen in weightlifting gloves. Fingerless gloves are also worn by bikers as a means to better grip the handlebars, as well as by skateboarders and rollerbladers, to protect the palms of the hands and add grip in the event of a fall. Some anglers, particularly fly fishermen, favor fingerless gloves to allow manipulation of line and tackle in cooler conditions. Fingerless gloves are usually leather and have a distinct appearance. Much like rocker jackets, they are sometimes worn by people who wish to display a certain sense of rebellion, recklessness, "toughness" or general disregard for the standards of society (such as John Bender in The Breakfast Club). This is why they are quite common in heavy metal and punk fashion and are sometimes decorated with metal studs or spikes. Some non-conformist individuals would wear a single glove on one hand leaving the other hand glove-less. A woolen variety became popular in the early 1980s, largely due to the example of English pop star Nik Kershaw. Fingerless gloves are also known as "hobo gloves", due to their association with homeless people.

Where can I buy some inline roller blades?
hi, i really want some aggressive inline rollerblades but i can only really find one good website called route one. Does any one know any good UK rollerblade sites??? please help lol, i want to find some good ones. And also what is the best brand to buy??? if i did buy blades would i need a helmet or wrist protectors? ( max price i would pay for blades is £130 )
alice x
please help!!!!!!!
You don't say what part of the UK you are in.
Yes, get the helmet and wrist guards. Your hands will almost always hit the ground when you fall and you are likely to loose skin. Aggressive skaters tend to use glove style protectors, I like them for protecting my hands better than the wrist splint style.
You aren't likely to hit your head often but the results are horrible. I know people that have put up with headaches for hours to months because they weren't wearing a helmet. I also knew a person who died because he fell and hit the back of his head against the ground without a helmet. Fortunately, I wasn't there that night to see him go.
For aggressive skating, you want a "multisport" helmet rather than a bicycle type. They protect the back and sides of your head better and those areas are more likely to hit things than for recreational/fitness/speed skating.
If at all possible, go to a good store for your first skates and get knowledgeable help. Finding skates that fit well (critical to skating well and enjoying it) is really hard via the internet.
Loose feels good when you first try them on but evenly snug around your feet allows the skates to act as part of your feet instead of letting your feet wander around uselessly inside the skates.
There are several groups in London that can assist you (or do an online search for Inline Skate Club in your area.

What size should i get for rollerblades?
Hi. I want to know if i should get a size 7(UK) for my new Rollerblade Bladerunner Pro 78 Mens Inline Skates that I want to get. Please help because I don't know if I need a size smaller or bigger.
Only way to buy skates if there are no shops nearby to try them on.
Order online from inlinewarehouse or other store that has a liberal return policy. Order several sizes up front. Try them on for comparison and return what doesn't fit. DO NOT SKATE ON THEM. If you do, the wheels will show wear, and the will be un-returnable. Just stay on carpeted floors.
You want the skates to be as tight as possible around the ankle without causing pain after being on for at least ten minutes. If there is movement now, it will just get looser as time goes on. At that point moving up or down will cause blisters.
