Why Hockey Players Must Train Like They Play

Determining how to condition properly for hockey is a controversial subject that is debated by coaches from the atom ranks all the way up to the pros.  When it comes to designing an off-season training program, most experts agree on how to best develop strength, speed and power in young hockey players, but there is always disagreement on how to best develop conditioning.

 

Slow & Steady Does NOT Win the Race

The game of hockey is characterized by short, explosive, high-intensity efforts interspersed with periods of complete rest.  The best hockey players in the world are the ones who are strong, fast, agile and powerful - not those who can run at 10 miles in the fastest time.  Hockey is simply not an endurance sport.  In fact, the best players on the ice tend to be the ones who perform poorly on off-ice tests of endurance.  

The challenge is that players feel as though they are becoming more fit for hockey by focusing on increasing their endurance in the off-season.  Players who go for long slow distance runs over the summer will definitely develop their endurance, but this enhancement will come at the expense of their ability to perform at the highest intensity level consistently throughout the game.

 

Do You Want to  Be "Fit" or "Fast"?

Ultimately, on the issue of proper conditioning for hockey, it comes down to choosing between being aerobically ‘fit’ or being strong, fast and powerful.  Players must make a trade-off when it comes to conditioning.  They can either possess a high level of endurance or game-breaking speed and quickness.  It is physiologically impossible to develop both of these qualities to their highest extent in athletes.  

Elite hockey players are speed and power athletes and must train to enhance those qualities.  Players must develop their ability to perform repeated high-intensity intervals and maintain their ‘jump’ and explosiveness throughout an entire game, instead of focusing on their ability to go for long distances at a moderate pace.

In the majority of cases, young players are simply unaware that the endurance training they are devoting so much time and energy to is actually detrimental to their overall performance on the ice. 

Bottom line:  When young players focus on doing long slow distance training instead of high-intensity interval-based training, they are quite often training themselves OUT of hockey shape and are making themselves SLOW.

The disgraced scion of a prominent San Jose family is to report to prison in January, capping a long fall for a former high roller who counted hockey great Mario Lemieux as a golfing buddy and who jetted on private planes to Las Vegas, where he amassed a $4 million gambling debt.

Del Biaggio pleaded guilty to one charge of forging financial documents to obtain $110 million in loans from several banks and two NHL owners—Craig Leopold of the Minnesota Wild and Los Angeles Kings owner AEG.He used the money to purchase a controlling interest in the Nashville Predators.

Besides the fraudulent loans, the Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a lawsuit seeking to recover roughly $20 million of individual investments the agency accuses Del Biaggio of spending on personal expenses. Three of those investors on Tuesday urged the judge to mete out a lengthy prison sentence,complaining that Del Biaggio squandered their retirement funds and children’s education nest eggs.

Several other victims, including childhood friends and longtime business associates, wrote the court with similar sentiments. Although those losses weren’t included in the indictment, Breyer still ordered him to also pay back those victims. In all, Del Biaggio has to repay a total of $67.4 million.

“A betrayal of trust is an awful thing,” Breyer said. “I don’t care if you can pay back everything—this will never leave you and that’s the real punishment here.”

Breyer said hiscooperation with investigators once his fraud was discovered spared him a longer prison sentence of more than 10 years.

He filed for bankruptcy and many of his assets, including his Nashville Predators stake, will be sold by court order.

On Tuesday, while his weeping parents and friends looked on, He tearfully apologized and vowed to pay back everyone.

“I was blinded by pride and ego,” he said. “Everyone makes mistakes. I will come back from this and I refuse to let this define my life.”

Following the action on the ice when the Canadians are battling it out will depend on which league peaks the interest of hockey fans around the world. The action that people view on television could be from the Western Hockey League hockey players or those that play in the Ontario Hockey League. The mix of hockey players on the ice could change up some weeks when members of the Quebec Major Junior take charge. It does not matter which league is playing during the week because all hockey fans know that the action they view will be thrilling either way.

The Canadian Hockey League serves as host to hockey teams that play the game of hockey just as passionately as their counterparts do in the United States. On any given week, however, it is quite possible for teams to be fined because their coach overstepped the boundaries of decorum and expressed feelings that were later deemed to be very inappropriate by officials or those higher up. Canadian hockey teams are resilient enough to find the courage to step back out on the ice the next week and win their team another victory that is far less controversial.

Before the Commissioner of a certain league imposes such penalties, all parties are consulted to ensure that all transgressions are made a matter of record and there are no grey areas on what was said, or what occurred by all parties involved. Once the air has cleared around the two teams, and the appropriate penalties have been assigned, the Canadian hockey players can in clear conscience return to the ice for another battle.

While they continue play, they will probably continue to hope that their coaches will remain silent on the sidelines and continue to be just as devoted to guiding them like they are supposed to instead of letting their passions get the best of them during a game. Real Ice or Synthetic Ice?

Imagine ice skating on July 1st in your shorts and t-shirt on an outdoor rink at a downtown festival. Pretty cool huh? Well if it's so cool, how come more of these types of rinks aren't out there?

I think there are a number of reasons why more communities are not installing synthetic ice surfaces. First of all the word just doesn't seem to be getting out there to the extent it could be. In Canada for example - people I speak to just can't get their head around synthetic ice. "Does it really work?" they ask. The fact is that they aren't as fast and you can't glide as far - even the very best products have to admit that much - regarless of what they sometimes claim.

In the past (and actually still today) there were some pretty dodgy products out there trying to pass themselves off as good enough for skating. They were relatively affordable but they just plain did not work very well and kids using them really struggled. I have seen this myself when my 2 children were coming up through minor hockey and training on poor quality synthetic ice.

Well guess what? Today - despite some excellent products on the market there are still a lot of really poor products being sold. They make ridiculous claims that can't be backed up. It seems anyone with access to buying cutting board stock plastic can have them machined into skating panels and sold as synthetic ice for a cheaper price. Well eventually the marketplace will sort that out, but in the meantime the industry suffers from the bad reputation of poor products.

Excellent synthetic ice products are not inexpensive per se. That said - they are a viable and tremendous alternative to spending millions on a mechanically refrigerated ice surface (and building), they can be used inside or outside year around, and the maintenance is restricted to periodic cleaning and application of glide enhancement at regular intervals. Indeed, they are environmentally friendly as well. Want to green up your community? Install a synthetic ice surface.

Only a select few products on the market today (2 or 3 of them) are engineered for the sole purpose of skating; they have no other practical use. If users could onyl have better access to the best products they would soon realize how good these products work.

If you are really interested in getting a high quality synthetic ice surface in your community then contact some companies selling the best products and see if they will agree to work with you on a pilot project basis. With this scenario everyone wins - the community gets to test it out and the synthetic ice company gets to promote their product.

National Hockey League– Pass, Hit and Goal

National hockey league is a game that features about 30 odd ice hockey teams and it was created way back in 1917 in Canada. It is part of the major leagues that takes place in North America and National hockey League is commonly referred to as NHL. The thirty teams are divided into two sects of fifteen teams in each who play in all major championships. When it was initially founded, it had only about 4 teams and over the years it has gone through a major metamorphosis and today has many more teams and is very popular around the world. If the teams are at a tie , having the same score, then overtime will be awarded and again whoever can score a couple of extra goals wins. The players will be given a penalty shot, which means they play solo against the goal keeper of the opponent team and try to score. There is no ball in this game, but a puck, and the players don't play with bats, they use sticks. The ice hockey is a game played by those who have good balancing skills and are able to walk around on ice. It takes a lot of practice to get used to walking or skating on ice, and more so when running about playing a game, trying to dodge other players and focusing on the goal post.
