Fitness in Your Fifties - Taking it Outdoors

The summer is rapidly coming to a close, but there are still many weeks of beautiful weather…perfect for exercising outdoors.  Living in the southeast has its advantages!  It’s often still hot enough in the afternoon that it’s probably preferable to engage in these activities early in the morning or in the evening, after 6pm, when it’s a little cooler.  The great part of being active outdoors is that the possibilities are endless.  You can walk or run…you can ride a bike…you can rollerblade, and the outdoor pools are still open if you enjoy swimming.  How about a little volleyball or softball or even soccer?  Live in a place that has great trails?  Go hiking with friends…give rock climbing a try…or take a rafting trip.  All of these are wonderful ways to enjoy the great outdoors, while giving your body a workout.

You also need to consider some other activities that you usually call  “chores,” which in reality are a great way to be active and productive at the same time.  Take some time to weed your garden.  How about planting some new flowers that will bloom in the fall?  Your grass is still growing…30-40 minutes of mowing your lawn will burn some calories (unless you are using a riding mower).  Throw open that garage door and give it a good cleaning.  Many suburbanites use their garages as a storage unit, rather than a place to park their car.  Items in it tend to pile up, so take some time to go through boxes and dispose of unwanted items.  Wash the car…or cars.  Make it even more physical by giving it a good waxing after it’s dried.  If you own a dog, take it for a long walk (20+ minutes) every day.  Every one of these are great ways to move your body, work your muscles, increase your heart rate as well as provide your body with vitamin D (which comes from exposure to the sunlight).  It doesn’t always have to be “formal” exercise to count.

I urge you to take advantage of the extended daylight…the moderate temperatures and the chance to enjoy the outdoors.  You might be tempted to take your iPod or MP3 player with you on these outings.  My advice is to skip it and just enjoy the sounds of your surroundings.  If any streets are involved, you need to be listening for cars, which wearing headsets might make difficult.  Try saving your music for those indoor workouts on the treadmill or elliptical.  I always think its fun to enjoy your surroundings on a walk or bike ride.  Sometimes you might notice something that you’ve never seen before, which can surprise and delight you.

It’s important to intentionally plan these activities.  Be sure that you do something 3-5 times per week. Put them on your calendar as a reminder.  Whenever possible, enlist a friend to go with you.  The camaraderie will provide you with stimulating conversation and make you more accountable.  It will make the time go faster too.  On the flip side…don’t put this off if you don’t have anyone who can join you.  Instead, challenge yourself and make the commitment to do it!  Marking it off on your kitchen calendar will make your accomplishment more visible.

If you still have school age children, don’t let the back to school rush cause you to give up exercise (with the promise to return to it in October).  If your child plays a fall sport, go to the games and walk around the field during the warm-ups.  See how many circuits you can complete before the game starts.  Invite your teenager to join you for your walks or bike rides.  Maybe even make an afternoon of yard work a parent/teen activity.  Doing things together will encourage conversation and provide some valuable family time.  It will also show your child that you care enough about yourself that you choose to be active!

Where can I buy some inline roller blades?

hi, i really want some aggressive inline rollerblades but i can only really find one good website called route one. Does any one know any good UK rollerblade sites??? please help lol, i want to find some good ones. And also what is the best brand to buy??? if i did buy blades would i need a helmet or wrist protectors? ( max price i would pay for blades is £130 )
alice x
please help!!!!!!!

You don't say what part of the UK you are in.

Yes, get the helmet and wrist guards. Your hands will almost always hit the ground when you fall and you are likely to loose skin. Aggressive skaters tend to use glove style protectors, I like them for protecting my hands better than the wrist splint style.

You aren't likely to hit your head often but the results are horrible. I know people that have put up with headaches for hours to months because they weren't wearing a helmet. I also knew a person who died because he fell and hit the back of his head against the ground without a helmet. Fortunately, I wasn't there that night to see him go.
For aggressive skating, you want a "multisport" helmet rather than a bicycle type. They protect the back and sides of your head better and those areas are more likely to hit things than for recreational/fitness/speed skating.

If at all possible, go to a good store for your first skates and get knowledgeable help. Finding skates that fit well (critical to skating well and enjoying it) is really hard via the internet.
Loose feels good when you first try them on but evenly snug around your feet allows the skates to act as part of your feet instead of letting your feet wander around uselessly inside the skates.

There are several groups in London that can assist you (or do an online search for Inline Skate Club in your area.

Different Types of Rollerskates

Unless you're a roller skating guru, you might not be aware of the different types of rollerskates that are available and what they are designed to do. Among the different roller skate types you will find are Artistic, Jam, Speed, Derby, and Rhythm. Depending on what style of quad skating you plan on doing, you will want to get the appropriate skate style for it.

Artistic Skates

Artistic skates are used in many different skating disciplines, but the easiest comparison is to that of a figure skate used on ice. Artistic roller skates are composed of a leather boot, very strong sole plate, and a jump bar that adds additional reinforcement. Like ice skating, an Artistic skate is used on a roller skating surface for single free skate, pairs skating, solo dance, pairs dancing, precision or synchronized skating, and show teams. Although each of these skate disciplines is different, the common thread that they share is the use of an Artistic style quad skate.

Artistic skaters need a skate that is strong enough to withstand the force that is exerted on the skate when jumping or landing. The boot on artistic skates is higher than those found on other quad skates. The boot sits a few inches above the ankle providing more support and stability for the foot.

Jam Skates

Jam skates are different than any other type of rollerskate because of its unique low-cut design and lack of toe stop, that's right, no brake. The original jam skate design was actually much different, resembling an artistic skate with a high-cut artistic-style boot and tradition toe stop brake. However, over the years, the design has transformed into a skate that resembles the picture to the right. The modern skate design features a low-cut speed skate boot and a dance plug in placement of the toe stop. They feature lightweight frames for fast, agile movement for the skating style associated with jam skating.

As a skating style, Jam skating is a combination of dance, gymnastics, and skating. Jam skating's roots stem from the roller disco days of the 1970s, but over time it has evolved  and been influenced by multiple sources of artistic outlet. Modern dance, artistic skating, and break dancing have all contributed to the jam skating style of today. For jam skaters, jam skating is more about personal expression rather than aggressive or speed type of skating. The free flowing movements of jam skating have been given countless names such as hexing, shuffle skating, toe-skating, and spot skating. But regardless of its name, jam skating has always been about expression and passion.

Speed Skates

Most people instinctively think inline skates when they hear speed skates. The truth is that speed skates are available in both inline and quad form. While inline speed skating is more common and more widely recognized, quad speed skating is extremely popular. A speed skate features a boot design that more closesly resembles a shoe. A speed skate will fit closely to the fott and have very little padding, increasing the foot to boot ratio. The cut of the boot is lower and will usually sit around the ankle bone, or underneath it. The design of a speed skate creates tremendous maneuverability and freedom of movement.

From a usage standpoint, speed skates are intended to be used in lap skating, time trials, sprints, relays and marathons. They typically offer lightweight plates to reduce fatigue for skating long distances. In recent years, jam skaters have also taken to speed skates because they offer a similar design and freedom of movement. The most notable difference being that a speed skate features a toe stop, unlike a jam skate that uses a toe plug.

Derby Skates

Roller derby is a worldwide sport that many people know about, but may not fully understand. While I won't go into detail about the particulars of the sport, just know that roller derby is a contact sport that utilizes strategy and strength to win. Derby skates are designed specifically for use in the sport of roller derby, though they resemble the everyday rollerskate design.

Derby skates feature a low-cut boot design with a lace up closure and Velcro strap to properly position and fasten the foot in place. The boot design itself has more padding than a speed or jam skate so that it can withstand the bashing and bumping that roller derby entails. Derby skates can also be equipped with accessories to protect against injury, as can be see with the skate to the right.

Rhythm Skates

Similar to a Jam skate, Rhythm skates are designed for dancing, shuffle skating, and slides. The difference between a Rhythm skate and a Jam skate is most evident in the boot design. Unlike a Jam skate boot, a Rhythm skate boot is not low cut. In fact, the boot design looks very similar to an Artistic skate, essentially providing you with the ankle support benefits of an Artistic skate, but the freedom of movement of a Jam skate.

Rhythm skates do not have a traditional toe stop brake, but instead features a dance plug like a Jam skate. If you want a skate that allows you to move to the beat, with added ankle support, the Rhythm skate is the ideal choice.

Now that you have all the ammunition to make your choice of what type of skating you are mainly interested in take a look at the skate styles to see what type of skate best suits you. Get out and get rollerskating today! If you are ready to pick up a new pair, go to RollerSkates.net. You can find many different styles, colors, and sizes at every price range.

Skateboard Bearings – The Different Types

Skateboard bearings are an essential part when it comes to skateboards and to how they ride. The better the bearings the faster they travel and the smoother they are which makes it easier to ride which in turn makes it easier for the rider.

There are many different brands of skateboard bearings to choose from, all varying in price and quality: Bones, Flip, Lucky, Reflex, Independent, Shortys, and World Industries. Bones and Swiss Bones are considered to be the best bearings you can get for your skateboard and many of the professionals use these which is mirrored in the price for them of up to £75. If you are a beginner you are better off getting a lower end priced set of bearings for under £10. Your bearings can be become damaged if you do not look after them properly and from the way you ride the skateboard and so for beginners it is better if you use ‘beginners’ bearings to accommodate your learning to skateboard and your wallet.

What are Skateboard Bearings Made Out Of?

Skateboard bearings are usually made from a few different materials. Stainless steel and chromium steel are usually the main metals the bearings are made out of, the retainer maybe nylon or stainless steel, and the ball steel or ceramic steel. Depending on your requirements skateboard bearings can be made out of rubber, metal or Teflon. All bearings have the option of coming sealed with metal protection shields or open. People buy sealed bearings because dust and dirt can get inside the bearing and cause them to not run properly and then lead to failure. The protective coating prolongs the life of the bearing and how well it rides.

Thrust Bearings for your Skateboard – The New Age Skateboard

Carver, a famous brand of skateboards, have developed a skateboard that has the smoothest ride ever and can handle hard hitting drops that most skateboards can’t. It was actually found by mistake but they have designed a new skateboard that doesn’t use the standard ball bearing but thrust bearings. What does this mean? It means that usually when you hard hit a surface after a jump your skateboard gives way and doesn’t follow you once you have hit the surface which means you hit the floor. Thrust bearings means they can handle these hard hitting drops and go with you so you can carry on skating. Carver has been testing this skateboard for months now and the general public are eagerly awaiting its release.

The Martha Syndrome

“Martha, Martha”, He said. How many times have we Stress Junkies been a Martha?

To set the scene, and for those who may not know the story, Martha and Mary were sisters. They had a brother named Lazarus. Now Martha and Mary have a house in Bethany near Jerusalem, and their brother has invited some friends over for dinner. One of the friends is an important guy, a real man of the hour back then – his name is Jesus. He comes from a small town, his father was just a carpenter, his mother got pregnant before she was married, but this man has made a name for himself. Anyone who’s anyone wants to talk to him, listen to him, touch him, or be touched by him. If Today in Hollywood was on TV back then, he’d have the whole show every night!

So Martha and Mary are having company…I mean to say, a PARTY. Because Jesus always travels with his twelve closest friends, so that makes sixteen for dinner. Plus, Martha and Mary just HAVE TO invite some of their friends and neighbors just so everyone will see who they rub elbows with.

So much to do, so much to do! Big party to plan, prep and cook for. In those days, you couldn’t just order out or call the caterers; you had to do it all. The term potluck supper wasn't even coined yet! Water didn't come into the house, bread wasn't sold at the market. In fact, the grain had to be ground for the flour, the water had to be carried from the well, and the oven ran on wood and grasses that the women gathered. As for housekeeping, there were no companies like Merry Maid or Molly Maid. There was just Martha Maid and Mary Maid.

Now for those of you who don’t know Jesus personally, imagine the likes of Brad Pitt, Mother Teresa, Ronald Regan and Billy Graham ALL coming to your house at the same time - and still you haven’t even scratched the surface of this man Jesus.

To Stress Junkies like us, we know the routine for Martha. As soon as she learned that Jesus was coming, she went into high gear planning the menu, scrubbing, mopping, dusting, tidying. Of course, there are invitations to send, shopping to do, food to prepare…the list seemingly endless. And why not, she’s the older sister, the practical one, the responsible one. It’s what she does.

The big day arrives, and we can picture the house…it’s clean, fresh and orderly with sunlight streaming through the windows. There’s bowls of snack food, fruit and flowers out and about, cool drinks and the smell of delicious foods coming from the kitchen. Guests begin to arrive and who’s there to greet them? Little sister, Mary – the one who’s chosen to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen. The one who most likely sits among the guests at all the parties. Sure, she did a little prep work this morning…at her sister Martha’s insistence. But now, the party has begun, and she’s choosing the “one thing”, the “good thing” as Jesus later puts it.

Martha’s in the kitchen. She slaves away over hot pots in a hot room. She sets the table, brings out trays of food, refills glasses…Mary sits at the feet of the guest of honor, listening, laughing. She’s enjoying the time. Martha, well, she finally loses it. She complains to Jesus that Mary should come and help her.

Jesus responds, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things…” - Luke 10:41 NKJ

So she is:

1. Worried (careful – in the KJ)

2. Troubled (bothered – NASB, upset – NIV)

3. About MANY things

Picture this, you’ve been killing yourself for days, everyone is in YOUR house, eating YOUR food, and drinking YOUR wine. This party is all about Jesus, and here he is, he’s putting YOU on the carpet for making sure everything is perfect? And in front of EVERYONE – his friends, your friends, your sister! WOW!

And get this part, more than likely Jesus is not limiting his observation to just this day and time. He says “many things”. He’s knows Martha has a bigger problem. One that leaves her helplessly devoted to cooking, cleaning, serving, worrying, hurrying, and troubled. Martha, my dear friends, was a Stress Junkie! Martha could very well be the very first recorded Stress Junkie, proving that we are not the product of a fast society. We are a product of ourselves, our personality, our decisions; for if Martha, who lived two thousand years ago, was Type A, then there’s no blaming society for our problem.

We all know the symptoms. I mean, when was the last time that you sat and enjoyed a party at your house? Was there EVER a time? When was the last time you had a party or even guests for dinner that you didn’t pull out ALL your cookbooks to find something “special” to make? Ever? About that housekeeping, do you really think people are checking the corners, the baseboards, and inside the cabinets for dirt when they're at your house? I know what you're thinking...no, they don't check. And the reason they don't check is because they KNOW when they come to my house, it's clean. Believe me, guests may not notice what I do to prepare, but sure as hell, they'd notice if I DIDN'T do something.

I believe that was Martha's dilemma as well. She really really wanted to hang out with Jesus and the guests like her sister. In Martha's mind, if Mary had helped her, then maybe she'd have had the time to sit down and relax. Maybe so...but based on Jesus' take on her situation, probably wouldn't matter. Mary's help would just free Martha's time to go handle some other little detail.

So, what do we do with Martha? What do we do with ourselves? Should we be more like Mary? Can we be? There's no doubt that if you're reading this, you're the practical sister. You're the one who's easily distracted by many things that in your mind, HAVE to get done. Everyday tasks, household chores, work, kids, school, husband, church, PTA, soccer games, birthday parties, and so on and so on and so on...These things have to get done, right? And if not by you, then...frankly, by whom?

The answer is simpler said, than achieved. Remember when you were a kid and you wanted to learn how to ride without training wheels? What skill did you need to master? You also need it to roller skate, Ice Skate, walk a tight rope, actually, you need it just to stand up. It's called BALANCE. We Stress Junkies need to learn how to strike a balance between what needs to get done, and what HAS to be done. We need to take a few minutes out of each day to just stand still. That's right STAND STILL and pause. We need to take a moment or two out of every day to reflect on what's really important. That's all Jesus was saying to Martha. He wasn't bashing her for serving them, he was advising her to set priorities and take the needed time out to enjoy "one good thing", before her time was past.

Stress Junkies are notorious for always looking for what's next, rather than what's happening right now. Stop and smell the roses they say, and why not? Why not stop, smell the roses, and a writer friend so eloquently put it...while you're there, deadhead the spent blooms, pull a few weeds, and add some fertilizer. Strike a balance! Or at least for starters, admit one's needed and start there.

Inline Roller
Inline/Roller hockey skate wheels?

I play roller hockey about twice a week. How often should I replace the wheels on my inline skates? (I have Nike Skates and RinkRat VT333 wheels)

You don't say what kind of surface you play on, so I'll answer a couple ways.

If you're playing indoor, you should replace them when the grip is starting to quit. Your style of play will determine that. But you can tell when your turns aren't as sharp and when it is harder to stop, as wheels without grip are more likely to cause this. When I played goalie, I had harder wheels in back for this reason, it didn't stop me as much as gripier wheel did.

If you are outdoors, replace them when the wheel if flat. Since the wheels start with a kind of point, you can gage this rather easily.

Inline Roller Hockey - Getting Started

In the United States the sport of hockey doesn't receive near the same level of notoriety that other sports such as football, baseball, or even basketball receive…although we believe that it certainly should. However, that does not mean that the sport isn't immensely popular across the nation through ice and roller hockey leagues. In fact, hockey is one of the most popular organized sports across North America, and has been for well over 100 years.

Hockey leagues are offered nationwide at numerous hockey rinks, with most offering a variety of leagues for children and adults of all ages and skill levels. However, these leagues are not limited to solely ice hockey. As inline skating has gained in popularity over the past decades, so has the interest in Roller Hockey. All of the same basic rules apply to roller hockey that apply to ice hockey, with the only major variations existing in the playing surface and the type of skate you are using. Minor rule variations may exist from league to league, but the substance of the game is still very much the same.

There are many characteristics in the sport of roller hockey that make it vastly appealing to people of all ages. First, it is relatively inexpensive to become involved in when compared to ice hockey. Second, there are many leagues available that help make the competition level remain fairly even. Additionally, you can play the sport in any or all of the four seasons, regardless of your geographic location. Finally, you can put a team together of many of your friends who also enjoy the sport. There are many other reasons as well, but these are just some of the many.

If you are interested in becoming involved in roller hockey, you will need to purchase certain equipment to be eligible to play. The basic equipment is what you will need, any additional items are solely your decision:

  • Roller Hockey Skates (no brake is required)
  • Hockey Stick
  • Hockey Gloves
  • Hockey Helmet (with or without mask and HECC Approved)
  • Hockey Shin Pads
  • Hockey Elbow Pads
  • Roller Hockey Pants
  • Jock Strap (men) / Pelvic Protector (women)

Equipment Tips

An appealing characteristic of roller hockey is that is less expensive than ice hockey. The most important part in selecting your equipment is that you make sure it fits correctly. There is no sense in spending oodles of money on high-end equipment if it does not fit properly. Make sure your equipment fits properly, then worry about price if you so choose.

In that same mindset, a crucial purchase will be your roller hockey skates. Make certain that your skates feel comfortable and fit properly. If they are not comfortable and/or do not fit properly, you will be in lots of pain when you have to make those quick stops and turns.

If you are just starting in roller hockey, do not hesitate to save yourself a few bucks at first by just wearing some sweatpants over your shin pads. However, we strongly recommend that after a few times out that you purchase a pair of roller hockey pants. Roller hockey pants are lightweight, breathable, and reinforced in the knees and seams to be durable. Sweatpants are suitable in the beginning, but you will quickly find yourself sweating in places you never knew you could sweat.

Getting Started

If you are interested in getting started in roller hockey, but you don't know how, try starting with a friend or joining a league at your local roller hockey rink. You can search for a rink in your area by clicking here. Once you find a rink close to you, you are well on your way to seasons and seasons of fun.

Vertical Roller Mill Of China

Working principles of the Vertical roller mill

The motor dives the grinding table to turn the through the speed reducer.

At the same tim, hot air comes into the roller mill from the air inlet.

The materials fall down the centre of grinding table from the feeder.Because of the centrifugal force, the materials move to the edge of grinding table form the centre.

The materials are crushed by the grinding roller when by pass of the groove on the grinding table.

The crushed materials continue to move to the edge of the grinding table until taken away by the airstream.

Then the bigger materials fall down the grinding table and the process of crushing continues When the materials in the airstream pass the separator on the top of the mill the materials fall down the grinding table from the taper filler under the force of guide leaf blade .

The fine powder comes out with the airstream, and is gathered by the dust catcher of the system The powder gathered is the final product of roller mill. In the process of the contact of ai rstreamy.

The materials are dried to meet the clients'need at the proper moisture. Through the adjustment of the angle between the separator and the leaf of wind's direction(not suitable to the small type of vertical mill),and also the speed of the separator rotor,it can reach the proper fineness of the materials.

Vertical roller mill Technical Advantages

1. Low Investment Cost

This mill itself can crush, dry, grinding, classifying, so the system is simple, and occupation area is about 50% of ball mill system. In addition, it can be installed outside, so it will reduce a large number of investment costs.

2. Low Operation Cost

⑴ High efficiency: roller compacted materials directly onto the grinding disc, so power consumption is low. Compared with ball mill, it saves energy consumption by 30% ~ 40%.

⑵ Less wear and tear: As the roller is not in direct contact with the disc, and material of the roller and liner is high quality, so life lime is long.

3. High Drying Ability

As the hot air inside contacts directly with the material, drying ability is higher, and it saves energy. By regulating the air temperature, it can meet requirements with diffirent humidity.

4. Simple and reliable operation

⑴ It is equipped with automatic control systems, so remote control makes it easy to operate.

⑵ It is equipmented with one device, which prevents the roller from contacting with the liner directly, and avoids the destructive impact and severe vibration.

5. the stability of product quality

As the material stays in the mill for a short time, it is easy to detect and control the product particle size and chemical composition, to reduce duplication of milling, stable product quality.

6. Maintenance convenience

By reparinging fuel tank, rotating the arm, it is fast to replace the roller sleeve, and liner, and reduce the downtime loss.

7. Environmental protection

It is with small vibration, low noise, and the overall sealing. The system works under negative pressure, so there is no dust going out. It meets the requirements of the state Environmental Protection.

How can I combine inline speed skates with trick skates?

It doesn't have to be aggressive skates but the skates that guys use to go real fast combined with trick skates (maybe excluding grinding). When I say trick skating I mean free skating.

Free skating: Riding around cities and towns with friends wile doing a series of tricks and finding the fastest root to get from point A to point B.

What kind of wheel set up should I have to combine free skating (or trick skating) with the speed of race skating? But not to fast, I need some control. Take a look at this wiki page about wheel set ups and tell m weather I should have it like one of these set ups or do you guys know of a better set up to combine speed with monouver tricks and maybe even a little slalom...ok maybe thats a bit much but hey, maybe not.

Wiki page on wheel set ups:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/full_rocker...

Just incase you wanted to know what slalom is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/freestyle_s...

I've just started practicing slalom over the summer. I bought a pair of the Rollerblade Twister II Pros:

http://www.blackdiamondsports.com/Rollerblade_Twister_II_Pro_p/rollerbladetwisteriipro.htm

I think these are probably the best skates to get right now in Canada for freeskating and a bit of slalom. The frame is too long for slalom unless your skate size is over 42-43. Other options would be some durable Hockey Skates. Recreational skates generally lack the side-to-side ankle support for the bit of jumping that you might do for freeskating.

Now as for the rockering, I find it hard to go full speed with a full rocker because it becomes unstable (which is perfect for slalom)

http://skating.thierstein.net/Knowledge/Inline_Skating_Rollerblading_Knowledge_Rockering.html

The site above gives all the different types of rocker. For freeskating I would probably go for a front rocker, so that the skates are more maneuverable but still stable.

It all depends on what you do more often.

I hope this helps.

That's Hockey

That's Hockey

$6.74

When Etienne takes his cousin out to play street hockey for the first time, he has a lot of explaining to do. Street hockey is nothing like ice hockey. Everyone has to wear a No. 9 Canadiens hockey sweater, but beyond that, the game has more to do with a fun day in the snow than with winning or losing. Etienne''s cousin comes away with a talisman and a story worth passing on. David Bouchard grew up on the prairies, where he lived and breathed street hockey. Every detail of That''s Hockey, from Mop and Tooth to the mugs of hot chocolate, is drawn from experience. In That''s Hockey, David Bouchard and illustrator Dean Griffiths team up for the second time. Dean brings the same lively playfulness to street hockey here that he brought to a Harley-riding tooth fairy in David Bouchard''s Fairy.

Fun and Easy Indoor Calorie Burners 4 Kids

Gyms/Fitness Centers:

Check out your local YMCA, gym or fitness center for calorie-burning fun activities that they offer kids like gymnastics, indoor basketball, wrestling, kick boxing, martial arts, wall-climbing, track, badminton, volleyball, ping pong, swimming, racquetball and tennis. You could even get your own workout while waiting.

Dance Studios:

A great way to burn calories in a variety of classes including ballet, tap, modern, jazz, hip-hop, line dancing, ballroom dancing, yoga, free movement classes and other music/dance combination classes.

Indoor Rinks:

Ice-skating, roller-skating, inline-skating can fill hours of fun without even realizing you've workout.

Museums:

They exist in most cities, and provide interesting, educational and fun activities that keep your kid on the move! Indoor nature centers or aquariums offer similar movement opportunities.

Restaurants with Games:

They're all over. Choose restaurants that offer the greatest energy burners, including laser tag and other fast-paced activities. Most have salad bars, so plan on light meals. Another great option is to create an ‘Activity/Play Room' in your house, where you set up areas for your child to try different activities.

At Home:

· A plastic tub filled with costumes, dress-up clothes, and accessories like crowns, wands, toy shields, armor, masks, vests, belts, shoes, hats, grass skirts, scarves, play jewelry, wigs...

· Boom box with dance music tapes or CDs to have family dance parties

· Build a tent and have a living room camping trip.

· Hop scotch mat, action games like Twister, Charades, Simon Says, Follow the leader

· Paddle balls, indoor ball toss games, bean bags, juggling balls, hacky sack, indoor basketball hoop and soft foam balls

· Jump ropes, skip-it, small kid-safe hand weights, exercise stretch bands.

· Try household cleaning with items such as brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, feather dusters. You would be surprised how many kids love to clean!

· Do the "TV commercial boogie" whenever the ads come on. You'll be amazed at how much moving you'll do to the soundtracks of those endless commercials! And be sure to engage in collective booing when junk-food ads fill the screen.

Skate Blade
Figure Skate Blade Discolored/Rusty?

I skated in my Riedell Blue Ribbons 121 today for the first time. After I got off the ice I wiped the blades down with an old rag and put them in my soakers. However, I took off the soakers at night, about 7 hours after I got off the ice, and I noticed that some parts of the blade were black. I suspected that this was rust and I used baking soda and a heavy-duty kitchen sponge and took most of it off. I wasn't able to get all of the black off though. Will this affect my skating? Also, I think I may have dulled parts of the edges a bit in the process. Is this okay too?
Also, when I skated today, I felt pain in the soles of my feet. The skates do not have insoles-are they supposed to? The tops also rub against my ankle and take some skin off. Is there a way to prevent this too?
What do you recommend?

This is rust, I suspect. Well, not so much rust as oxidation. You need to dry your blades off twice - once after skating, and again when you come home after taking the soakers off (don't leave those on either). Leave your skates out of the bag at home to dry. Cheaper skates like yours have a tendency to rust very quickly, unlike more expensive blades. But... Scratching it off, you mad, woman?! You're ruining your blades. Soak em in cola and gently rub it off with a terrycloth. Get the blades sharpened again after, because rust dullens your blade sharpening by putting tiny scratches on them! So no, it's not okay now, you need to get your skate blades sharpened again (although to be fair, the factory sharpening on skates is rarely any good so you should get new skates sharpened by a professional figure skates sharpener anyway)

Second of all, it will take a while to break your skates in, about 10 hours of skating. Don't lace the top 2 hooks at first, this will help. Also, put some sports tape where it rubs on your skin BEFORE skating, this will stop the skin from coming off - it helps me anyway (although some people say it gives them extra blisters, it really helps for me). Anyway give it a try and see if it helps. You could also get bunga or silipo pads or some other gel stuffing (like the sort in saddles for instance).

If you continue to have pain in your soles after, I'd firstly wonder if you're lacing too tight and if the skates are the right foot shape for you. Insoles may be required if your problem is with the arch.
