Mobile Ice Cream Catering and Co-branding: a Business Perspective

Many people in the frozen dessert industry – particularly the independent operators – struggle with not just a seasonal cycle, but managing the inherent growth potential of their current operation and structure of that growth. For example, should a thriving retail business stay in a vertical market and attempt wholesaling, or would franchising be a better opportunity? Should you diversify across market segments, perhaps increasing the product line to another food group, such as hotdogs, sandwiches or grilled foods? Should you co-brand? Would increasing the mobile catering part of the business make more sense?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then the next question should be "what business structure should I evolve into to effect this type of growth?" By business structure I don't mean whether or not you should be an LLC or a "C" Corporation – I'm assuming all that is in place already - but more whether or not you should have separate Strategic Business Units (SBUs). An SBU can be a separate legal entity (Corporation or LLC) or a wholly-owned subsidiary of your current entity.
Having separate SBU's for different aspects of your business allows you to track profit and loss much easier, and allocate funds/budgets much more effectively. Additionally, you can try different marketing or sales techniques in one SBU without affecting the other too seriously – particularly if your branding is different.

Create a mobile catering SBU.
Assume you're "ABC Ice Cream Store" that's operating a fixed-base retail business. If you create an SBU that's "ABC Ice Cream Catering" you can track the P&L of the catering arm of your business to determine the best marketing techniques etc. without affecting the sales of the store – unless you specifically plan to and want to. While everybody's in business to make money, you could choose to make your mobile catering operation a cost center, rather than a profit center by allowing it to work on a break-even basis or even at a loss as part of a strategic marketing plan. The returns would have to be driven back to another business unit – and this can be very lucrative. For example, suppose you had an opportunity to place an ice cream cart at a State Fair. Generally, there is a fee to participate, and coupled with employee costs to run the cart this could be significant. To gain visibility and traffic, suppose you sold your product at cost, and at the same time gave every customer a "$1 off" coupon off their next purchase at your retail store. That means overall, you've lost money at this event. However, from a marketing/conversion perspective, you would be able to tell immediately by the numbers of redeemed coupons how effective the event was for you, and at the same time you would see a significant increase in traffic at your store – for a loss-leader on your mobile cart. Converting a one-time customer at an outdoor event into a repeat customer at your store can be worth making the mobile catering SBU a cost-center rather than trying to attract repeat business solely on product quality and goodwill.
Alternatively, if you make your mobile ice cream cart a profit center, you should be able to see a higher margin on sales by virtue of the fact that there's lower overhead – no rent for a storefront etc. You should, however, create a charge-back for commissary services from your store to your mobile catering business to even the playing field.

Create a co-branded SBU
This presents an opportunity to either do something entirely different, or something similar. For example, "ABC Ice Cream Store" may want to offer hamburgers or sandwiches. Or, you could open a coffee shop selling pies and cakes (and of course, ABC Ice Cream!). Co-branding is not new; in the early 90's, Miami Subs Grill started selling Baskin Robbins ice cream in their sub shops – some say the first co-branders in food service. Now, Miami Subs Grill is owned by Nathan's (hot dogs) and co-brands with Kenny Rogers Roasters (chicken) and Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips (they no longer sell Baskin Robbins). Co-branding (or simply moving into a lateral market) gives you the opportunity to smooth-out the seasonality of the ice cream business if you want to. You could offer complementary products – or simply products that work well together, even if seasonal. You might not think that barbecue and ice cream go together – but I've been asked several times to provide just that solution in a mobile catering environment. Having multiple product lines in a mobile environment also broadens the opportunities for revenue growth – being able to cater two lines at one event (i.e. a State Fair) or multiple events with different products simultaneously.

Going vertical
Selling to local hotels, restaurants etc. at a wholesale level will gain a new revenue stream, and again, setting up an SBU for "ABC Ice Cream Wholesalers" will allow you to directly monitor your P&L. From a mobile catering and marketing perspective, going wholesale offers new opportunities. For example, having an ice cream cart with your branding/logo on it but being used by the restaurant or hotel at an event is a great validator of your product quality. You also have the opportunity to rent your cart to your wholesale customers or even work some of their events for them for an additional revenue stream. On the flip side of the marketing coin, you can then say "We provide ice cream to the Posh Hotel on Main Street" in your advertising literature.

Franchising
Creating a franchise almost certainly means creating a separate Business Unit. From this, you can plainly see the P&L and monitor the activities of your franchisees. From a mobile catering perspective, you can opt to provide your franchisees with a cart, or set guidelines for them to purchase their own. Since franchise branding is all about a uniform "look-and-feel" it's in your interests to work directly with a cart company for consistency. The downside on franchising from a mobile catering perspective is that you have no control over how your franchisee presents your brand to the public.

Italy for Seniors Travel

It's no surprise that Italy is one of the world's top tourist destinations, with amazing sights like ancient cities, classic works of art, charming villages, majestic natural scenery and much more spread all over the country. It's also a great place for seniors travel in particular, with a large range of great historical tours, wine tastings, education and language packages and cruises tailored to overseas visitors on offer.

Senior citizens enjoy a respected status in Italy. Culturally, they are considered not old, but wise and experienced having contributed long and well to society. This great respect for seniors translates to all sorts of benefits like discounts at restaurants and all sorts of local places, so be sure to ask wherever you are. However, in terms of overall discounts to well known attractions, we have heard in some instances that seniors travel discounts do not get offered to non-EU citizens, but be sure to ask.

Avoid the queues. As anyone who's been to Rome or Florence in summertime can tell you, seeing Europe's top artistic sights is no mean feat during high season. Visitors from all over the world queue around the block, and sometimes the block after that, to see the many masterpieces on display. We are talking HOURS. If you want to see these great works without standing the sun all day, come to Italy between mid-March and May or in September and October, when the crowds are considerably smaller. Another great way to avoid a long wait at the Vatican Museum in particular is to come on the last Sunday of every month, when admission is free and the line moves considerably faster! Alternatively pre-book your entry tickets. This is a great way to avoid the terrible hassle and something I personally do before all my trips.

Prepare for the heat. Italy is one of the hottest parts of Europe in high summer - in the capital, for example, the temperatures frequently exceed 30C during July and August. For the most comfortable trip possible come between April and June or in September and October, when temperatures will range from 18-25C. The ottobrate, or "beautiful October days", are especially well known as a great time to be in Rome. If you do come during the high season, bring plenty of water and sunscreen and wear a hat during the midday sun. It's easy to get dehydrated when there are so many fascinating sites to visit! I have also found that some of the shopping centres are not air-conditioned, you find this in France too. So at times in high heat, an escape to the shops is not an option.

Take your time. Even without the scorching sun and thronging crowds of summer, seeing all the sights of Italy can be a demanding task for anyone. In fact, most people find themselves walked out after only visiting a couple of the main historical sites in Rome such as the Roman Forum or the Coliseum. Many of the country's coastal and rural tourist sites, moreover, are difficult or inaccessible to anyone with mobility issues. The best way to get around this problem is to take it easy, prioritize which sites you're most interested in and don't try to cram in too many activities in one day. If you truly are interested in visiting the famous historical sites and museums, my advice is to allow plenty of time to do this and try not to do too much in a day.

Stand for your coffee. It is a whole lot more expensive if you take a table at a cafe for your coffee break and panini. You will see the locals standing at the coffee bar because it is cheaper. However, I personally see taking a table at a local haunt as part of the tourist attraction - watch the locals and recover your feet. But if you are on a budget, stand for your coffee.

Savour the flavor. Of course, another of Italy's top attractions is its great food. The home of pasta, ice cream and pizza has a deservedly good reputation for its delicious traditional fare - make it your business to try all three! The Trastavere food district in Rome is a good place to start. You will find great deals everywhere for food, particularly if you are willing to explore the back streets a little and get off the tourist path. A great cost saving tip is to take a set menu, generally offered at lunch time. They include a range of courses and almost certainly come with a glass of wine. So, eat your main meal during the day at lunch time like the Italians. You can walk it off in the afternoon. For the true lovers of Italian food, there are plenty of cooking courses to do. You can choose from half day courses to 2 week immersion experiences.

Enjoy wine country. For wine lovers the world over, Italy is a feast for the taste buds. Famous varietals like Chianti, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Pinot Grigio all come from here, plus dozens more you can come to know and love during your stay. Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to vineyard tours, which are dotted all around the country. If you are not staying in one of the wine regions, again, you can take day trips from some of the major destinations like Florence to Chianti. There are plenty of options from Rome, Milan and Naples too.

The AFC standard states that a dog belongs to the boxer breed only if two thirds of its body color is not white. They want the assurance from an authority that they are indeed paying for the right breed.

Unfortunately, many new pet owners, being inexperience, base their decisions solely on registrations. This results in many perfectly healthy white boxers being euthanize.

A white boxer gets its fur color due to genes inheritance. It is not an unhealthy animal, and it certainly is not an Albino. An Albino means a lack of pigment. You tell if a dog is an Albino just by looking at the color of the eyes. The white boxer is just like any other healthy boxer, except that most of its fur is white in color. It will still bear a small percentage of colored markings on various parts of its body such as the face.

However, the white boxer has a higher chance of becoming deaf after 6 to 8 weeks. This is caused by a lack of pigment cells in the inner ear. Without adequate sensory hairs, the hearing is affected. It is this lack of pigment cells that cause the coat of fur to be white as well.

Usually when a new Internet Marketing method is introduced it becomes hot. The Super Affiliates promote it and make a small fortune. Then tens of thousands of people know about it. Within about 18 months this new method still works for the people who spend full time implementing it but the buzz has died down since everyone is aware it already exists. The new buzz now is focused on Cell Phone Marketing. As early as March 19th 2007 USA Today wrote an article about this. They predicted that the youth of today will bring this type of marketing to a whole new level. This is over 2 years before Mack Michaels came out with his Cell Phone Cash course.

Now Mack Michaels certainly isn't the first person to use Cell Phone Marketing. In fact, companies offering services like we'll give you answers to anything you want. The only problem with this type of marketing is that you have to know what you are doing or you'll just get "stuck". Nothing in life is free but the great news is with a little ambition it's not unrealistic for the average person willing to step up to the plate a bit to make a few grand per month with something like this. And Mack Michaels other mentoring program, he was famous for personally answering all his emails.

I never quite understood why someone making over 500k monthly personally answered all his clients emails. But then again, his astute work ethic is probably what got him to this level in the first place.

A good ball glove can have a big effect on youth's enjoyment of playing baseball and even about whether baseball is a worthwhile sport for them to participate in. Each youngster has their own level of coordination and confidence, along with their own style and preferences, and fortunately, there are so many types and styles of gloves available now, that you should be able to find one they like. You don't see kids get hurt often but it does happen and it will happen more often with the child that feels uncomfortable with the baseball equipment they're using.

Bad Bounces

Last week, while watching a youth baseball game (11 year olds) a batter hit a ball hard up the middle, fortunately missing the pitcher. The ball hit the side of the mound and bounced up to hit the base umpire in the shoulder. She was hurt and lay on the ground several minutes before getting up. That highlighted well, the speed the balls are reaching and that the young infielder playing with awkward baseball glove is going to playing with fear. Yes, some fear is good, as it keeps them sharp and makes the game exciting, but too much fear and they're going to get discouraged.

Many of the kids on these teams have gloves that are too small, and overwhelmingly, you see their reluctance to catch well-hit grounders. They generally wave at it going by them and sigh in relief that it wasn't hit right at them. One youngster in the outfield ran to make a diving catch only to have the ball pop out of his glove. They used to see that if your glove touched a ball, you should have caught it and it is an error for you. When a ball is in your glove, it should stay in there. In this kid's case, the ball was clearly in his glove and yet it popped out. The reason for that is that the glove didn't fit his hand and the web wouldn't close tightly.

He walked dejectedly back to centerfield, his position, and cursed at himself for dropping it. It was like a scene out of a Charlie Brown episode. If he'd hung onto that ball, he would have been walking on clouds and be the pride of the team. I don't have to tell you how important peer pressure is with kids these days and when kids never catch the ball, it can deflate the team and even the crowd of parents watching the game. Sometimes, it's downright torture to watch a ball game if the kids can't catch or throw properly.

Young pitchers too, can have trouble throwing strikes, and after walking batter after batter, you can sense disappointment. The glove on the pitcher's hand acts as a counterbalance when throwing and if it doesn't feel comfortable for him, you may be in for a long inning.

A fair number of kids come from homes that can't afford a new glove every year and they may not be able to afford baseball shoes. If there's one piece of equipment you need to focus on for youth baseball players, it has to be the glove. Your child is out there standing for half of the game, with this glove on their hand. If it's uncomfortable, and doesn't fit, that has to take some of the enjoyment out of it.

There's a mind-boggling array of youth baseball brands out there to choose from Rawling, Mizuno, Wilson, Spalding, Rawlings, Nokona, Akadema, Kelly, Nike, Louisville, SSK and more. The problem with many of these big brand names is not only the inflated prices associated with these brands, it's the weight and stiffness of the gloves. The materials and the stitching are sewn well enough. They aren't designed with kids in mind who after all, don't have time to break the glove in. Within one year, they will have likely outgrown the glove, so what's the point of buying a glove like that? The glove ends up unused in a closet or on the garage floor becoming a nuisance object.

When people opt-in and request a callback, team leaders call and close the sales for you. The professional closer concept is actually a great idea, as it eliminates the need for the business owner to be a sales person. Unfortunately, many PAS owners are finding that their PAS site just sits on the web with very little activity. The people who are making huge incomes with PAS are not treating it ‘passively’. In fact, they are taking a very active roll and running huge ad campaigns. The ad packs have not been proven to produce regular sales. PAS is not passive, as it clearly claims to be. In order to make money here, you will have to MARKET.

The 1 Step System attempts to solve the problems of the internet newbie by providing them with an ‘internet marketer’s toolbox’. ‘Everything you’ll need’ in order to promote and resell the system. It doesn’t claim to be totally passive. The 1 Step you have to take is to market the system. People who opt-in to your site are directed to a teleseminar where one of the owners does all of the selling for you on a conference call. People send you their money without ever speaking to you. How does this model fair? Sales in the beginning were very good as networkers called up other networkers to make sure they got in before the ‘two up’ compensation plan was put in place (far from the No Selling claim).  Once the ‘two up’ comp plan was put in place sales plummeted. In order to make money here, you will have to MARKET to other network marketers. The teleseminar is designed to sell people who have been through the wringer with other programs, and the value of the toolbox is not immediately apparent to the internet newbie.

Emerald Passport is another supposedly “passive” business. They have an online presentation that claims that if you buy their information products you’ll have access to their presentation that once on the web will drive thousands of people to send you $1000 over and over again. For the internet novice, this seems like a dream come true. Once you look under the marketing hype, you find that the new rep is responsible for driving traffic to their presentation, and then once the prospects fills in their info, they are meant to follow-up with and close the prospect. Someone who has never been in sales may well find this to be next to impossible. Passive? No, not at all. You have an online business presentation, that’s all. There is nothing passive about Emerald Passport.

The Automated Sales System for Coastal Vacations proposes to automate the sales process once the prospect has opted into the website. The online movie presentation does the explaining, and then the tour describes the packages available. If someone requests a ‘callback’, then a personal marketing assistant (a professional closer) closes all sales. To its credit, the System’s marketing material makes it clear that you will have to market the website in order to make any money. You cannot simply buy a vacation package and sit back and collect big bucks. You don’t have to be a salesperson, but you will have to market. The back office has marketing tools, but if they aren’t applied, your site will sit dead on the net.

In short, the words passive and business don’t really belong in the same sentence! Beware of any business that claims you can simply buy in and watch your bank account grow. You will need to work in order to make any money online, period. If you have no intention of learning how to be an internet marketer, do not put your hard earned dollars into any program. Learn what is expected of you before you pull out your wallet.  Find out how others are doing with the program you are looking at. If it claims to be fully passive – steer clear. At the point of writing, I know of no ‘business’ that offers a product that is totally passive and earning an income for anyone who bought into it and did NOTHING.
